| | Richard Bona, Gerald Toto, & Louka Kanza - Freedom (Lugano Jazz Festival, 2008) Duration : 647 Seconds Three famous world music performers reunite to woo the international audience with their superb musicianship, which is rooted in the rhythms and melodies of Africa, and embossed with American funk, R&B, jazz, blues, and Gospel. Presented here for promotion of the artists and the Lugano Estival Jazz. No ownership or artistic interest claimed by me. From Wikipedia.org: "Richard Bona (born October 28, 1967 in Minta, Cameroon) is a jazz bassist and musician. His real African name, as he said live in Montreal in a show with Bobby McFerrin, is Bona Pinder Yayumayalolo. (He said in a concert in Dominican Republic that his parents have Haitian roots) Bona was born into a family of musicians, which enabled him to start learning music from a young age. His grandfather was a singer (griot) and percussionist, and his mother was a singer. At 4 years old, he started to play the balafon. At the age of 5, he began performing at his village church. Not being wealthy, Bona made many of his own instruments: including flutes and guitars (with cords strung over an old motorcycle tank). His talent was quickly noticed, and he was often invited to perform at festivals and ceremonies. Bona began learning to play the guitar at age 11, and in 1980 aged just 13, he assembled his first ensemble for a French jazz club in Douala.[1] The owner befriended him and helped him discover jazz music and, notably including Jaco Pastorius in particular, whose work inspired Bona to switch his focus to the ... Check the buy link on his web site for the abums www.sonnylandreth.com About CONGO SQUARE Square is an open space within Louis Armstrong Park, which is located in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana, just across Rampart Street north of the French Quarter. The Tremé neighborhood is famous for its history of African American music. In Louisiana's French and Spanish colonial era of the 18th century, slaves were commonly allowed Sundays off from their work. They were allowed to gather in the "Place de Negres", "Place Publique", later "Circus Square" or informally "Place Congo"at the "back of town" (across Rampart Street from the French Quarter), where the slaves would set up a market, sing, dance, and play music. The tradition continued after the city became part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase. As African music had been suppressed in the Protestant colonies and states, the weekly gatherings at Congo Square became a famous site for visitors from elsewhere in the US In addition, because of the immigration of refugees (some bringing slaves) from the Haitian Revolution, New Orleans received thousands of additional Africans and Creoles in the early years of 19th century. | | Yoruba Andabo - Rumba En La Habana Con... - Congo Duration : 458 Seconds Artist: Yoruba Andabo Album: Rumba En La Habana Con... Track: Congo This name is nothing more than the conjugation of two words from African dialects. Yoruba is the name given to an extensive territory in southern Africa, inhabited by several nations and consequently their cultures. The word Andabo, in Carabalí language, means: friend, follower, admirer. Therefore, "Yoruba Andabo", seeks to be something like "the friends, the admirers and followers of the yoruba lands and their cultures." This group had its genesis in the Havana Docks where, in 1961, a group of workers met and created what was known then as "Guaguancó Marítimo Portuario." When they became professional, the group was re-baptized "YORUBA ANDABO" when, in 1986, they started working in a series of activities for and with the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC). These activities were organized by Cuban poet Eloy "The Ambia" Machado, who put the group in contact with singer and composer Pablo Milanés, who invited them to participate in the celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of the record company EGREM. From that moment on they started carrying out important work with folk singer Merceditas Valdés. In 1994, as they stepped into a new working stage, they adopted the name Folkloric Company YORUBA ANDABO. The company is made up of seventeen artists, including singers, percussionists and dancers, and professionally performs the most important genres of both religious and profane music within the Africans ... Raised on the traditional Soukous and Rhumba music of his homeland he began playing from an early age and went on to study both jazz and classical guitar - enrolling secretly in a classical music school where he also studied saxophone for a year. The leader of several bands, including Sumu, Motema and Jazmu, all of whom played at many festivals around Ireland including The Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures, The Bray Jazz Festival and Limerick Global Beats Festival Niwel is truly a musical innovator. With influences from far and wide, his elegant and fluent guitar playing draws from Niwel's past excursions with African rhythms, rumba, jazz, classical, and much more besides.
