Systema Solar is a musical-visual collective from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. It 's members, originating from a diversity of territorial and sonorous latitudes have found in the afro Caribbean vibrations a sea of possibilities to renovate the strength and spirit of Colombian music. The objective of the collective is to create audio-visual performances with their own style which they denominate the berbenautika. Influenced by the spirit of the Colombian piko culture (sound systems style performances), the members of the group come together to create, adapt and reinvent different music through improvisation, emphasizing the cult of joy and dance. They recycle the afro Caribbean and folkloric music of Colombia such as cumbia, bullerengue, porro and champeta and fusion these through electronic tools with contemporary rhythms and cultural styles such as hip hop, house, techno, breakbeat, breakdance, turntablism and live video performance. Systema Solar was created at the end of 2006 for a performance at the opening ceremony of the biennial of contemporary art of Medellin MDE07, since then, the group has presented itself all over Colombia and released its first CD in 2009 titled Systema Solar. Chanting by women and men ''(cantadoras'' and ''chureadores)'' blends with acoustic instruments, handcrafted using local materials: palm-wood Marimbas, wooden and leather bass and hand drums, and bamboo and seed rattles. This music is performed principally during four rituals: ''Arrullo, Currulao, Chigualo'' and ''Alabao.'' ''Arrullo'' is a saint worship ritual led by women, who prepare the saints, candles and altars and perform chants accompanied by drums and, on occasion, Marimbas. The ''Currulao'' (or Marimba Dance) is a festive occasion. Men play the Marimba and perform profane chants while people sing, dance, eat and drink, and recount stories. The ''Chigualo'' is a wake following the death of a young child. The body is covered with flowers and a cappella chants are performed around it. The ''Alabao'' is a wake following the death of an adult, where extremely sad chants are sung, also a cappella. Musical knowledge of these traditions is passed on orally from generation to generation with younger performers guided by more experienced musicians. Legendary tropical music singer and songwriter Joe Arroyo treated us to a rare live session during Music Voyager's visit to Barranquilla, Colombia in December, 2010. Torrential rain kept us from using our original outdoor location, so we begged a local library to close early and let us take them over...and they said yes! It was an amazing and technically challenging session, and a band that size made our sound guy sweat, but it turned into a magical night. Little did we know that it would be one of Arroyo's last live sessions. He passed away on July 26, 2011 at the age of 55. His music and his influence will live forever. Que viva Joe Arroyo! La rebelión sigue!
