Colombia: Peasant Farmer Reserve Zone of the Cimitarra River Valley
Duration : 462 Seconds

The Peasant Farmer Reserve Zone (ZRC) is a figure recognised by Law 160 of 1994, and is considered an important instrument for guaranteeing small scale farmers' access to land, to prevent concentration of property ownership, and protect the small scale farming economy and food sovereignty. On 10 December 2002, the Government of President Álvaro Uribe Vélez designated 550.000 as a ZRC in the Cimitarra River Valley. This was later suspended on 10 April 2003. Since then, as part of their work defending the rights of the peasant farmer, the Peasant Farmer Association of the Cimitarra River Valley (ACVC) has called for this suspension to be lifted.

Farmers in Colombia Work to Protect Food Security (ASPROCIG)
Duration : 273 Seconds

The Sinú River in northern Colombia has supported a diverse community of indigenous people for generations. The Zenu and Embera people who live by its banks depend on the river for fish, irrigation and drinking water. But in 2000, the Urrá Dam, built by a consortium of Colombian, Swedish and Russian companies, submerged over 7400 hectares of land, crops, homes and sacred sites. The dam displaced 2800 people and continues to threaten the lives of 70000 by altering vital food supplies. Areas of severe periodic flooding and drought caused by its flow have stymied traditional farming practices. Compounding this reality is the construction of a new dam—many times the size—by the Colombian government, presenting a constant looming threat over this beleaguered rural community. Enabling survival in a changed landscape. In response to the radical changes brought about by the dam, a local NGO—Association for Community Development of the Cienaga Grande (ASPROCIG)—is working to restore the ecology and agricultural productivity of the region by helping farmers along the Sinú develop agriculture and aquaculture farms suitable to the changed environment. With AJWS's support this year, ASPROCIG-supported farmers will establish 100 new farming systems.

TWO DEGREES UP - PART ONE: COLOMBIA
Duration : 377 Seconds

Small coffee producers in Colombia are already feeling the effects of climate change on this vital, high-value cash crop. At higher elevations in the southwestern Cauca department, production is still profitable, but as you move downhill you see the effect of what a two-degree temperature rise - projected for 2050 - could mean for the future of coffee production: devastated crops, and coffee farmers who have abandoned their coffee plants and been forced to move into less profitable crops. The farmers featured here, in Two Degrees Up: COLOMBIA, provide precisely the kind of testimonies that will help policymakers meeting in Cancun, Mexico for the COP16 Climate Change talks, need to hear.

Colombia: 5 MILLION displaced people
Duration : 416 Seconds

Colombia: Face the Displaced Almost 5 million people have been displaced in Colombia by violence. It's the second worst internal displacement crisis in the world, after Sudan. Contact the US Congress to ask your representative to: - Co-sponsor House Resolution 1224, which supports the rights of displaced Afro-Colombians, indigenous people, and women. - End aid to the Colombian military, use the funds instead to address the needs of Colombia's 5 million displaced people. - Cancel fumigation and forced eradication programs that have pushed thousands of farmers from their lands without reducing coca production. - Create opportunities for small-scale farmers, and stop the Colombia free trade agreement that would force them out of farming and into displacement. - Promote a negotiated end to the conflict. Take Action Now! witnessforpeace.org/facethedisplaced

MILIONS AGAINST MONSANTO - HELP !
Duration : 602 Seconds

MONSANTO IS EVIL ! These folks are pushing Genetically Modified crops (GMO's) onto the Third World in the name of ending hunger, much as the Rockefellers did with the 'Green Revolution' that was used to open world markets to chemical and hybrid agriculture. Multi-Billion $$ Monsanto Sues More Small Family Farmers ! Hundreds of the farmers around the world who are being forced to pay Monsanto to have their fields contaminated by genetically modified organisms. Taxpayers Forced to Fund Monsanto's Poisoning of Third World : Monsanto has also been implicated in the indiscriminate sale and use of RoundUp Ultra in the anti-drug fumigation efforts of Plan Colombia. Of the some $1.3 billion of taxpayers' money earmarked for Plan Colombia, Monsanto has received upwards of $25 million for providing RoundUp Ultra. Damaged Banana CropsRoundUp Ultra is a highly concentrated version of Monsanto's glyphosate herbicide, with additional surfactants to increases its lethality. Local communities and human rights organizations charge that Ultra is destroying food crops, water sources and protected areas in the Andes, primarily Colombia. Paradoxically, the use of RoundUp Ultra has actually increased coca cultivation in the Andes. As local farming communities are increasingly impacted by RoundUp Ultra fumigations, many turn to the drug trade as a means of economic survival. Regional NGOs have estimated that almost 200000 hectares have been fumigated with Ultra under Plan Colombia. Monsanto Hid ...
