The Peasant Farmer Reserve Zone (ZRC) is a figure recognised by Law 160 of 1994, and is considered an important instrument for guaranteeing small scale farmers' access to land, to prevent concentration of property ownership, and protect the small scale farming economy and food sovereignty. On 10 December 2002, the Government of President Álvaro Uribe Vélez designated 550.000 as a ZRC in the Cimitarra River Valley. This was later suspended on 10 April 2003. Since then, as part of their work defending the rights of the peasant farmer, the Peasant Farmer Association of the Cimitarra River Valley (ACVC) has called for this suspension to be lifted.

The Sinú River in northern Colombia has supported a diverse community of indigenous people for generations. The Zenu and Embera people who live by its banks depend on the river for fish, irrigation and drinking water. But in 2000, the Urrá Dam, built by a consortium of Colombian, Swedish and Russian companies, submerged over 7400 hectares of land, crops, homes and sacred sites. The dam displaced 2800 people and continues to threaten the lives of 70000 by altering vital food supplies. Areas of severe periodic flooding and drought caused by its flow have stymied traditional farming practices. Compounding this reality is the construction of a new dam—many times the size—by the Colombian government, presenting a constant looming threat over this beleaguered rural community. Enabling survival in a changed landscape. In response to the radical changes brought about by the dam, a local NGO—Association for Community Development of the Cienaga Grande (ASPROCIG)—is working to restore the ecology and agricultural productivity of the region by helping farmers along the Sinú develop agriculture and aquaculture farms suitable to the changed environment. With AJWS's support this year, ASPROCIG-supported farmers will establish 100 new farming systems.

Hundreds of the farmers around the world who are being forced to pay Monsanto to have their fields contaminated by genetically modified organisms. Taxpayers Forced to Fund Monsanto's Poisoning of Third World : Monsanto has also been implicated in the indiscriminate sale and use of RoundUp Ultra in the anti-drug fumigation efforts of Plan Colombia. Of the some $1.3 billion of taxpayers' money earmarked for Plan Colombia, Monsanto has received upwards of $25 million for providing RoundUp Ultra. Damaged Banana CropsRoundUp Ultra is a highly concentrated version of Monsanto's glyphosate herbicide, with additional surfactants to increases its lethality. Local communities and human rights organizations charge that Ultra is destroying food crops, water sources and protected areas in the Andes, primarily Colombia. Paradoxically, the use of RoundUp Ultra has actually increased coca cultivation in the Andes. As local farming communities are increasingly impacted by RoundUp Ultra fumigations, many turn to the drug trade as a means of economic survival.
