Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá)
Duration : 373 Seconds

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (Spanish: Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá) is an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 metres underground in a Halite mountain near the town of Zipaquirá, in Cundinamarca, Colombia. It is a very popular tourist destination and place of pilgrimage in the country.[2] The name "Salt Cathedral" is mostly to attract tourists - while a functioning church that receives as many as 3000 visitors on Sundays, it has no bishop and therefore no official status as a cathedral in Catholicism. The temple at the bottom has three sections, representing the birth, life, and death of Jesus. The icons, ornaments and architectural details are hand carved in the halite rock. Some marble sculptures are included. The Salt Cathedral is considered one of the most notable achievements of Colombian architecture.[3] Also it has been denominated as "Jewel of Modern Architecture".[4] The cathedral represents for the Colombian people a valuable cultural, environmental and religious patrimony. Colombian Afro Pacific: Architectural Heritage for all
Duration : 33 Seconds

Proyect: Colombian Afro Pacific: Architectural Heritage for all. By: Universidad del Valle, Universidad del Pacífico, with the support of the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID). It shows traditional housing in the Colombian Afro Pacific. In the Colombian Pacific, the way in which the houses are built and inhabited is a unique manifestation of its people. Modeling spaces to nature´s rythm; a cultural heritage of a culture that colors its dreams and inhabit them. The houses are made of natural materials. Their design and collective building give them a particular architectural character. These homes are constructed with native wood that becomes resistant to the wheather after it comes in contact with water. Their design is planned to make the most of the sea breeze and the favorable lighting conditions of the Pacific coast of Colombia. Families made up of grandparents, parents and children live in these traditional houses. Most make their living through the same nature that provides their homes. The arquitechtural design of the houses allows the strengthening of family ties. It is directly related to the landscape, its elements and its rythm, as well as to other cultural aspects like music, literature and oral tradition, customs, myths, rites and games, etc., of this particular society. Many of these traditions have migrated from the country to the city, where they persist and evolve sheltered by the breeze, the sun and the sea. It is a ...

Colombia at Columbia: What is Social Urbanism? Part 1
Duration : 5656 Seconds

Colombia at Columbia: Innovations in architecture and urbanism Curated by Clara Irazabal and Alejandro de Castro Mazarro, Latin Lab, GSAPP Colombia at Columbia: Innovations in Architecture and Urbanism seeks to critically explore Colombian urban-design transformations of the past 20 years as potential models of social urbanity. The urban reshaping of large Colombian cities is unprecedented in its scale, magnitude, and impact. "Social Urbanism," a term coined in Medellin, denotes this urban renovation as an approach in which politics, architecture, urbanism, and people come together as ingredients for successful socio-spatial improvements. As a result of these experiences in Colombia, urban design is enjoying renewed attention as an instrument for the enhancement of urban livability, social equity, and environmental stability in Latin America. The afternoon conference Colombia at Columbia: Innovations in Architecture and Urbanism will explore this intersection of politics, urban policies, and design with relevance for scholars and professionals of various disciplines. Co-sponsored by the Institute for Latin American Studies Keynote Address: Alejandro Echeverri, Director, Center for Urban and Environmental Studies (URBAM), EAFIT University Eduardo Behrentz, Director, Environmental Engineering Research Center, Universidad de los Andes Maria Helena Botero Ospina, Professor, School of Political Science, Universidad del Rosario Isabel Cuervo, PhD Candidate, Subprogram in ...

Cartagena Colombia Travel Adventure
Duration : 361 Seconds

Cartagena, Colombia Travel Adventure with Elaine Sarantakos. This is a preview of my week in Cartagena. It all started when I found a cheap flight with Air Transat for $199 including tax from Toronto to Cartagena return! Cartagena is a magical city along the coast of Colombia. It is so picturesque with old Spanish colonial architecture. It location made it popular for pirates to come and attack. Today Cartagena is an UNESCO World Heritage Site meaning nothing can be destroyed, only restored. My stay included accommodation at both El Viajero Hostel & couchsurfing with a Colombian Host. I met so many wonderful people locals and backpackers! I felt safe walking the streets and travelling alone. I went to Playa Blanca & Islas de las Rosarias for the day. A bus tour to Castillo de San Felipe & El Convento de la Popa. I tried yummy Arepas! The fruit was just amazing! Next time I need to travel to Cali, Medellin, & Bogota. Please comment, like & subscribe. More Cartagena videos will soon be coming. Elaine Sarantakos, Fabulous Living Coach www.fabulouslivingcoach.com

Why Design Now?: Medellín, Colombia
Duration : 422 Seconds

Why? A team of architects and urban planners, social workers and citizens has transformed Medellín, Colombia, from the most violent city in the world into a community whose architecture carries a powerful message of social inclusion. Public buildings, parks, libraries, schools, and museums were inserted in the most desperate neighborhoods to provide crucial public services. The Orquideorama, an orchid canopy in the Botanical Gardens, exemplifies the citys renaissance.
