Two hundred years earlier than the Rivergate Industrial District in northwest Portland, Oregon, native Chinookan people of the lower Columbia River lived in huge plank houses at a settlement we now call the St. Johns Site. The site and much of the rich wetlands that supplied the people with a bounteous food supply now are buried beneath thick fill and urban facilities. This video describes this now vanished lifeway and takes you inside an archaeological excavation that is shedding new light on the complex society of the first Portlanders.

First LIDAR Observatory in Colombia is located in Medellin chapter of the National University of Colombia. It was built by Alvaro E. Bastidas and Daniel J. Nisperuza from Laser and Spectroscopy Group at Physics School. I shot this video during my trip to Medellin, Colombia in October of 2010. Del Mar Photonics establish a subsidiary in this beautiful city to support South America customers. LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) is an optical remote sensing technology that measures properties of scattered light to find range and/or other information of a distant target. The prevalent method to determine distance to an object or surface is to use laser pulses. Like the similar radar technology, which uses radio waves, the range to an object is determined by measuring the time delay between transmission of a pulse and detection of the reflected signal. LIDAR technology has application in Geomatics, archaeology, geography, geology, geomorphology, seismology, forestry, remote sensing and atmospheric physics. Applications of LIDAR include ALSM (Airborne Laser Swath Mapping), laser altimetry or LIDAR Contour Mapping. The acronym LADAR (Laser Detection and Ranging) is often used in military contexts

Along with 8 other friends from England, Scotland, Norgega, USA and Colombia, François discovers the Lost City, Ciudad Perdida (Spanish for "Lost City") is the archaeological site of an ancient city in Sierra Nevada, Colombia. It is believed to have been founded about 800 AD, some 650 years earlier than Machu Picchu. This location is also known as Buritaca and the Native Americans call it Teyuna. Members of local tribes—the Arhuaco, the Koguis and the Asario—have stated that they visited the site regularly before it was widely discovered, but had kept quiet about it.

Evidence exists of houses and musical instruments made from bamboo in Colombia and Ecuador dating back 5000 years. The earliest known form of "paper" was made from the leaves that surround bamboo shoots and was used to keep simple records. Another form of paper made from bamboo has been in use for thousands of years to make books. The ancient Chinese also used slips—strips of bamboo cut lengthwise and then painted or carved—to record official documents. In the 1990's, archaeologists working in China's Hubei Province found the earliest version of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching, the famous Taoist text, copied on these slips. To pre-industrialized societies, bamboo has been and still is a mainstay of life, providing shelter, food, and a plethora of essential tools for many aspects of life. ANCHOR: The Spanish police force seized more than 700 priceless artifacts stolen from archaeological sites in South America and smuggled to Europe. Let's get the full story. STORY: The stolen treasures predate the Spanish conquest. Dozens of valuable golden objects, including masks, vessels, pendants and maces, were taken from Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. [Antonio Tenorio, Police Heritage Protection Force]: "All the antiquities come from pillaging in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia mainly -although we know that the arrested couple traveled to other countries as well. In any event, the investigation we just opened will clear all this out. We'll now conduct research into every pillaged deposit." Police have arrested a Spanish man and his Colombian wife who had been trafficking in stolen artifacts for years. They'd been selling them in auction houses in Europe, mainly in France. The couple planned to stage an exhibition and auction this month in France, but were arrested after returning from Colombia. The seized artifacts will be sent for analysis to the Madrid Archaeological Museum and authorities expected them to be claimed by their countries of origin.

If you one day visit the vivid and beautiful Colombia , I recommend a trip to the southern town of San Agustin. Green hillsides, small coffee farms and an interesting archeology site/park. NB! Keep your eyes wide open for the not too far away guerillas :-)
