A professor from the Chinese National Defense University says that China should not hesitate to protect Iran, even if it means launching world war three, as more US warships are dispatched to the region amidst heightening tensions. According to NDTV, a Chinese news station based outside the country, in regard to recent speculation that Iran would be the target of a US-Israeli military assault, Major General Zhang Zhaozhong commented that, "China will not hesitate to protect Iran even with a third world war," remarks described as "puzzling to some". The news report also quotes Professor Xia Ming as paraphrasing Zhaozhong's quote that, "not hesitating to fight a third world war would be entirely for domestic political needs." China's President Hu Jintao has sent a stark warning to neighbours and rivals, calling for the Chinese navy to "prepare for war".However the Chinese defence ministry said the comments were not aimed at any particular nation. Jintao's speech to military leaders in Beijing comes amid growing tension in the Asia-Pacific region. China claims all of the oil and gas rich South China Sea, as do 3 other countries. The US looking to boost its presence in the region has also come as a provocation for China.

But with a real conflict brewing for two weeks now between China and The Philippines over disputed territory, the threat has escalated. Stratfor explains the conflict. "The Chinese Philippine standoff near a disputed atoll entered its second day April 11th. ... More ships are en route to the scene, and the standoff continues." Tensions have been churning in the South China Sea for years now. The Los Angeles Times has the background, including why renewed tensions could escalate. "The South China Sea has been at the center of long-running territorial disputes involving China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan and the Philippines. The sea is vital for the fishing industries of nearby countries. Some speculate that it could also contain vast oil and natural gas reserves, but surveys have yet to show any large-scale deposits." Still — this latest conflict has posed serious questions about sovereignty. And ABC Australia notes, one question is rising above all others. Iran is accusing the EU of waging an economic war. It's in response to Europe considering banning Iranian oil imports in the coming weeks. There's already a verbal standoff over sanctions imposed by the US at the end of last year, aimed at pressing Iran into abandoning its nuclear programme. Tehran threatened to block a key maritime trade route in the Persian Gulf, and later backed off, but is still warning US ships against sailing in the area. Iran will reportedly hold another naval drill next month. But anti-war activist John Rees sees Western worries over Iran's supposed nuclear ambitions, as an excuse to curtail Iranian influence in the region. The Eastern (Dai Prefecture) Theatre : Huo Qubing's forces set off from Dai Prefecture, marched over 1000 miles and directly engaged the forces of the Xiongnu's Worthy Prince of the East (左賢王, "Wise King of the East"). The battle was swift and decisive, as the Worthy Prince's forces were no match for Huo's elite cavalry. The Huo's army quickly encircled and overran their enemy, killing 70443 men and capturing three Xiongnu lords and 83 nobles. Huo Qubing's forces suffered a 20% casualty rate but were quickly resupplied locally from their capture. He then went on to conduct a series of rituals upon arrival at the Khentii Mountains (狼居胥山, and the more northern 姑衍山) in order to symbolize the historic Han victory, then continued his pursuit as far as Lake Baikal (瀚海), effectively annihilating the Xiongnu clan The Western (Dingxiang) Theatre:The Han army mobilized as planned. After a journey of over 500 miles, they encountered the Chanyu's main forces of 80000 cavalry. This was unexpected, as the original strategy was to let Huo Qubing's elite troops deal with Chanyu's elite cavalry (the reason that the two Han columns switched route). The Xiongnu forces, however, had been long waiting in anticipation to ambush their adversary. The Han forces, on the other hand, were tired and outnumbered, especially since the eastern division had not yet arrived on the battlefield.
