Train travel from China to North Korea: Beijing-Pyongyang. See Videos 2, 3 and 4 for the walking tour of the DPRK. This was a propaganda tour that brings tourists to the country's showcase cities and most fertile regions. I posted these videos to give people who are thinking about visiting North Korea an overview of what they will likely see there (A variety of tours are offered but in general the itineraries are similar). These videos are not truncated or narrated, making them long and often boring, but NK footage is rare, so more is better in this case. I was mostly allowed to film openly because, again, it was of the best areas with the better fed and dressed elite population that the NK government wants the outside world to see -- which is poor, yet not much worse off than Eastern Europe or China was in the late 1970's. Don't be fooled though, these images are not representative of most of North Korea. Look for hidden videos smuggled out to see how too many North Koreans live, with oppression, famine, orphans, and not to mention the 200000 political victims living in soviet style Gulag camps. Should you hurry up and visit North Korea before it collapses? Unfortunately, you likely have many years to plan a trip, because nothing looks to change anytime soon. The former summer palace of the Late Empire Dynasty of Yihe Yuan is located among the northwestern outskirts of the Chinese capital of Beijing. It is also known as 'Gardens of Nurtured Harmony'. However, a number of buildings have managed to survive the ravages of time. In 1860, the Opium Wars reached the summer palace of Yihe Yuan. Western colonial troupes devastated the Chinese Garden and destroyed numerous buildings. Reconstruction of the pavilion was due to the Emperor's widow, Empress Dowager Cixi. After the death of her husband, Xianfeng, in 1861, the empress took control of the empire and subsequently ordered the restoration of the buildings that were destroyed during the Second Opium Wars. The dominant 'Longevity Hill', known as Wanshou Shan, is crowned by a 41 metre high pavilion, The Temple of Buddhist Virtue that was built in 1750. For many years, a cruise on Kunming Lake has not been reserved solely for the former family of the emperor, as it is now frequented by tourists from around the world. The widow's favorite haunt was the Marble Boat from which she enjoyed the magnificent view across the lake. In spite of past military destruction, the natural beauty of the elegant gardens of the Yihe Yuan has been extremely well preserved.

Known as the Venice of the Far East, Lijiang is an historic old Chinese town in the northwest province of Yunnan. It was the centre of the Nakhi, a Tibetan-Tobirmanic nation that had an impressive and unique culture. Dayan, Lijiang's old town, contains an intriguing variety of canals and waterways. It developed at the beginning of the 12th century, during the Late Song epoch. The picturesque centre of the old town of Dayan is an architectural jewel. Numerous streams and three rivers flow through the historic part of the town and there are several beautiful stone bridges that date back to the time of both the Ming and Qing dynasties. For over 470 wonderful years of the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties each of the Naxi rulers came from the Mu family and for more than 22 generations life in and around Lijiang was led by this family until in 1723 the Qing Dynasty appointed a new government, thus the Mu era came to an end.

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) runs from Kashgar in Western China to Islamabad in Pakistan, and isn't so much a highway as a 'high road'. It took a stunning 20 years to finish the road, and even today it continues to suffer from extreme weather and environmental disasters. The KKH runs through the highest concentration of soaring mountain peaks and raging rivers in the world, and is generally considered to be among the most spectacular areas on our planet. Traveling here isn't for the faint hearted, although transportation has improved significantly in the past decades. In October 2010 I had the chance to travel the Karakoram Highway. Although Pakistan had suffered its worst floods in recent history the same year, most parts of the road were still intact. Nevertheless, traveling the road proved a massive challenge and also a great adventure. As these events had scared off many tourists and travelers, I found myself among locals for nearly all of the time.
