| | China's Economy Problem: An Issue of Politics? Duration : 222 Seconds Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com China's Premier Wen Jiabao stressed recently during his trip to Hubei Province a few points on economic development. They include, improve macro-control based on new situations and problems in economic operation; expand domestic demand and stabilize external demand to promote steady and relatively fast economic development. In April, growth in China's industrial added value, import and export, investment in fixed assets, and bank new lending have slowed down. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) government has taken several measures to stimulate the economy. Concerns about China's economic slowdown have grown. China's scholar in economy Qi Yanchen expressed, in recent years wage levels in China are not rising, but steadily decline. China's overall economy is experiencing a downturn, and people's expectations are it would collapse. Qi Yanchen: "Premier Wen's words on boosting domestic demand is good, but it is not feasible to implement. Many banks cannot lend loans, as no one wants to get loans. The interest in business' investment declines, causing shrinking in employment and wages. Many people's income fell significantly. Thus it can't reach the point of improving domestic demand." Qi Yanchen also expressed that cost of goods increased due to bank's high interest rate. In addition, investment risk increases as a result of the economic downturn. So enterprises do not want to invest or borrow loans. Qi ... | | US-China political relations with Prof. Andrew Nathan Duration : 2560 Seconds The engagement policy pursued by all US presidents since Nixon has worked, but with some unexpected results. China developed economically, joined world systems, and underwent domestic liberalization. But it did not become a democracy and does not seem to be on course to become one in the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, it has emerged as a major power, is on track to be the world's largest economy, and is building up its naval power. Does the rise of China present a threat to American interests, and if so, in what way? Andrew Nathan is Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science at Columbia University. He has taught at Columbia University since 1971. He served as director of the East Asian Institute at the School of International and Public Affairs from 1991 to 1995 and as Director of Graduate Studies in the Political Science Department since 1997. His teaching and research interests include Chinese politics and foreign policy, the comparative study of political participation and political culture, and human rights. A native New Yorker, Dr. Nathan received his degrees from Harvard University: a BA in history in 1963, an MA in East Asian regional studies in 1965, and a PhD in political science in 1971. | | Rumors Everywhere--A Political Conspiracy? Duration : 194 Seconds Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Due to the Wang Lijun incident, Bo Xilai, the Chongqing Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Secretary was removed from office, causing rumors to circulate widely among the general public and on the internet. People's Daily, the CCP's media mouthpiece, and the Global Times published articles on March 26, accusing these rumors as being a "political conspiracy." The articles called the rumors a "virus" that damages the Party and the country, urging the general public to guard against and eliminate such rumors. However, analysts believe the rumors result from a lack of transparency in Chinese politics. Many rumors started circulating after Bo Xilai was removed from office. Rumors said: "Zhou Yongkang, the Politics and Law Committee Secretary was against punishing Bo Xilai." "The central Military Committee will soon restructure the armed police, to no longer accept orders from the Politics and Law Committee." "Recently, 'Gunshots were heard within Zhongnanhai', Beijing's Chang'an Street was guarded by armed police and anti-riot squads, and a military helicopter was doing surveillance in Beijing." "It seems the CCP's high level members are guarding against a conflict between the military and the police." The Global Times published an article titled: "Persistently Guard Against Rumors", urging the general public to stay on alert and not listen to or spread such rumors. The Global Times said, the increasing ... | | China Digital Times: Measuring the Political Pulse of Chinese Cyberspace Duration : 2938 Seconds Speaker/Performer: Xiao Qiang, Director, Counter-Power Lab at UC Berkeley Sponsor: CITRIS (Ctr for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society), UC Berkeley (Headquarters), Research Exchange seminar Abstract: China Digital Times aims to contribute to the ongoing debate over the Internet's political impact by moving beyond anecdotal evidence and creating the world's first systematic and comprehensive social media aggregator of political contents in Chinese cyberspace. It also explores innovative approaches to make its content accessible by netizens behind of the Great Firewall of China, focusing particularly on the use of new, sophisticated counter-censorship technologies. In recent years, the issue of censorship in China has been well exposed through numerous media reports and research projects, including my own work. However, the expanding online political discourse and its impact have not yet been systematically documented, and so remain poorly understood. The government's efforts to control online information, the implications and limitations of such control, and the capacity of Chinese netizens to advance free speech and facilitate political mobilization, remain crucial issues in our understanding of both China's political prospects and the role of the Internet under an authoritarian regime. Developing a deeper understanding of the role of the Internet in Chinese politics based on empirical data has been a considerable challenge. In my previous research ...
