| | Loretta Napoleoni On Why China Is Thriving Duration : 1632 Seconds Economics Professor Loretta Napoleoni, is the author of "Maonomics: Why The Chinese Make Better Capitalists Than We Do". In it, she ascribes China's success to their flexibility. Having witnessed the demise of communism in Russia, China, in a bid to ward off a similar fate, decided to pump money into the infrastructure. This they did by tempting foreign investors with the promise of cheap labour, which in turn, gave many Chinese people an opportunity to earn money, and thus create a middle class. She thinks the West can learn a lot from China but that we are too ideological, too rigid. The West must produce more in order to slow the shifting balance of power from West to East. | | 西游记(Journey to the West) - 大圣歌 Duration : 212 Seconds In 1986, 西游记(Journey to the West) exploded onto television screens in China and South East Asia as an adaptation of one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. Praised as the most authentic interpretation of the novel, it also starred 六小龄童(Liu Xiao Ling Tong) as the title role of 孙悟空(Sun WuKong or 'Monkey') who gives a very compelling performance of the mythological "Monkey King". This song is called 大圣歌(Da Shen Ge) and is performed by 胡寅寅(Hu Yin Yin). When the series first aired, this was the opening theme music for the first few episodes. After which (and during subsequent VCD and DVD releases), it was replaced by an instrumental theme. I never understood why -- I'm rather fond of this song! Apologies in advance for the quality of the video -- please keep in mind it was 1986 (and while the computer graphics are poor compared to today's standards, in 1986 they were considered 'state of the art') and unfortunately, I only had this series in VCD format!
