Wang advises budding gardeners to get permission from at least half of the owners in the building, before starting a rooftop farm. | | FBInews - China farmers face 'exploding' watermelon problem. Duration : 56 Seconds Farmers in eastern China have been left perplexed after their watermelons began to explode one by one. An investigation by state media found farms in Jiangsu province were losing acres of fruit because of the problem. The overuse of a chemical that helps fruit grow faster was blamed in one report by China Central Television. But agriculture experts were unable to explain why chemical-free melons were exploding. They cited the weather and abnormal size of the melon as factors. China Central Television said farmers were overspraying their crops with the growth promoter, hoping they could get their fruit to market ahead of the peak season and increase their profits. According to the Xinhua news agency, 20 farmers in a village in Jiangsu province planted imported seeds from Japan, with 10 households saying their watermelons began exploding last month. Farmer Liu Mingsuo told Xinhua that more than two-thirds of his crop had blown up. He said he had used chemicals to boost their growth on 6 May, and the following day more than 180 melons exploded. Mr Liu was reported to be the only farmer from the 10 households who used chemicals. Wang Dehong, who has been farming watermelons for 20 years, couldn't understand why his fruit also exploded as he had not used any chemicals. Agricultural experts investigating the incident were unable to offer an explanation. China has approved the usage of the growth chemical under certain quotas. So far, tests show the chemical is safe, Xinhua ... Tags :China, farmers, face, exploding, watermelon, problem., funny, fireworks, lord, fire, faces, boom, rings, rocket, return

| | Chinese Farmers Turn to Violin-Making Duration : 120 Seconds Violins have become big business in a farming village on the outskirts of Beijing, where residents have turned their hand to lutherie, churning out hundreds of thousands of stringed instruments every year. More than 1200 people are now employed in factories and workshops, carving the sound posts and bridges, varnishing the body, fitting and trimming the tuning pegs, surfacing the fingerboard, and adjusting the strings at Huadong Musical Instruments Corporation Limited, one of the instrument-makers based in Donggao village. Unlike traditional lutherie, in which a master-craftsman builds a violin single-handedly, Huadong employs a factory production-line approach in which the violin will pass through more than 10 different pairs of hands during its 50-day build process. [Chen Xiaona, Factory Worker]: "I am doing the assembling and fitting. I fit together the pegs, strings, the bridge, the tailpiece, the saddle and the tail gut, as well as a sound post on the inside. Once I have finished assembling it, you can play the violin and make beautiful music. The bridge and the sound post are particularly important to the sound of the violin." The finished pieces, all of which are hand-made, are sold for anything between 200 to 40000 yuan (30 to 5900 US dollars) to more than 30 countries. Su Jun, a violin teacher from China's central Hubei province who traveled to the village to inspect and possibly buy some of the company's high-end violins, said he was impressed by the quality ... | | NZ court rules against Chinese land sale Duration : 136 Seconds Chinese companies are buying up farmland all over the world, but a court in New Zealand, a country where agriculture is fundamental to the economy, has ruled against one such sale. | | Urban Farming Gains Popularity in Beijing Outskirts Duration : 126 Seconds For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com It's nothing new that food scandals are a problem for people living in China. From poisoned baby milk powder to less than delightful dumplings made with cardboard. And now some residents in Beijing are taking their food into their own hands... venturing out into the countryside to provide food for their entire family. Residents in Beijing pluck their own vegetables straight from the soil in urban farm plots that have sprung up on the outskirts of the city. A recent string of food safety scandals have prompted some health-conscious citizens to boycott the markets and grow their own produce by renting their own plots on a local farm. Like many of the farm's customers, 42-year-old business manager Jiang Bing makes the one-hour drive out to his urban farm on the weekends... collecting enough vegetables to last his family through the week. [Jiang Bing, Urban Farmer]: "To be honest, consuming food that is sold in the city worries me - you never know what they have added. But here at the vegetable garden, we are very clear with the farmer on our requirements on what he can add to our vegetables such as fertilizer or plant food, and he has to have our permission. And our instructions to him are very simple - we just ask that it's all natural." Farm owner Liang Ping started offering vegetable plots for rent at the beginning of the year. He charges about $300 a year for each ... | | Melamine Tainted Milk Resurfaces in Chinese Pig Farms Duration : 109 Seconds For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com Despite Chinese authorities' apparent attempts to eradicate melamine-tainted milk, it has resurfaced. This time, in pig farms in China. Milk powder tained with melamine is known to cause kidney stones in infants. Melamine tainted milk has once again reappeared in China. A recent investigation by the Chongqing Evening News, shows piglets are being fed tainted milk, containing up to 515 times more the amount set by Chinese safety standards. Because sow-milk is scarce in large pig farms, piglets are often fed milk powder instead. Over two tons of tainted milk powder was sold to at least five pig farms in China. Chongqing Evening News said authorities were aware of the problem since October, but did nothing, until eight months later when the media reported it. The poisoned milk was bought and sold for a very cheap price. It was finally reported by a buyer at a pig farm. He said he became suspicious after the pigs began experiencing what looked like food poisoning symptoms. He then sent a sample for inspection. The tests, carried out last October, showed that the powder at its worst, contained 1288.1 miligram or melamine for every kilogram of milk, putting it 515 times above the legal 2.5 milligram safety limit. Melamine tainted milk was a serious problem three years ago in the Sanlu scandal that killed several infants and poisoned hundreds of thousands. This ...
