A quick visit to a local jewelry store that sells silver, gold and jade items. The store had a good inventory of gold considering the size and location. It is a pity that US jewerly stores will not sell items like gold and silver bars. I think they would do really well because demand is there and many simply do not want to pay the premiums and shipping of online bullion dealers. Getting scammed in Shanghai China. 16th Apr 2009. Chinese Tour operators will drive tourists to different retail outlets, in this case a Jewellery shop to get the tourists to buy their jewellery. The retail prices are exhorbitant and they reduce the retail price by 50% and say you're getting a great deal. The scam is that the jewellery is worthless. A good ending though. We did get our money back after threatening to video tape and harrass all their customers that were due to come in shortly. The owner in the White Jacket tried to grab the camera at the end but I shoulder charged him and pushed him back. He quickly backed off.

Childrens jewelry imported from China has come under the spot light in the United States, after an investigation by the Associated Press found it contained the toxic metal cadmium. Cadmium is a known carcinogen that can affect the kidney and brain development in children. Its effects are worse than lead—a metal that was at the center of a toxic toy scandal in 2007. The Associated Press organized lab testing of 103 pieces of childrens jewelry in stores from New York, Ohio, Texas and California. The tests showed 12% of the pieces contained at least 10% cadmium by weight. A Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer charm had as much as 91% cadmium. Chinese toys and trinket makers apparently are using cadmium—a metal thats shiny, easy to work with, and cheap—instead of lead. In the United States there are strict limits for lead levels in childrens products, but theres no limit on the content of cadmium in jewelry. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said it will start an investigation on childrens jewelry imported from China. Retail giant Wal-Mart and accessories chain Claires—both of which sell jewelry found by the AP to contain cadmium—say they will voluntary remove the products from sale.
