JYV 12: Chinese Heritage Camp, Colorado 2011
Duration : 346 Seconds

Some vlog footage from my short stay at the Chinese Heritage Camp high up in the Colorado mountains, Labor Day weekend 2011. I had an amazing time with all the kids and the counselors and I really love what the camp is all about. I hope to go back again! Here is their mission statement: Heritage Camps for Adoptive Families, Inc. serves as a post adoption resource and advocate for children and families with diverse heritages. We accomplish this by facilitating annual heritage camps, which provide culturally relevant and family-centered experiences for every member of the family. These camps provide an opportunity to share in a common experience that fulfills a sense of community and individual identity. It is our hope that every adopted child will leave a heritage camp knowing more about who they are and where they came from, and that every member of the family will have a better awareness of and sense of pride in their adopted child's birth heritage. The camps let children and families relish in being part of a larger group "just like themselves." For more information, visit heritagecamps.org Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!

Professor Geremie Barme gives the Inaugural CIW Annual Lecture, Australia and China in the World: whose literacy? This video was recorded at The Australian National University on 15 July 2011. Geremie R Barmé is the founding director of the Australian Centre on China in the World and professor of Chinese history at ANU. He has published widely on Chinese history, culture, thought and politics. He is the author of a number of monographs, an editor and a translator. Beijing's Heritage - China
Duration : 953 Seconds

September 2005 As China gears up for the 2008 Olympics, Beijing's historic quarters are being threatened by developers. Can anything be done to protect its cultural heritage? "What's happening to old Beijing today is a form of cultural genocide," complains resident Ed Lanfranko. "The past is being obliterated -- sold out to build a new Beijing." Courtyard homes, unique to Beijing, are being knocked down to make way for new developments. Nothing is safe from the wrecking ball. With no freedom of speech or form of protest, residents whose homes are earmarked for destruction are virtually powerless. "I want to protest. I want to voice my opinion. In China this is impossible," despairs Ding Ai. It seems that the past has no place in modern Beijing. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Celebrating Chinese-American Heritage With Lucy Liu
Duration : 69 Seconds

WONG: Moving to New York where some middleschoolers got a special lesson in what it means to be Chinese from a local celebrity. Here's a look at their time spent with Lucy Liu. Growing up Chinese in a non-Chinese country, its hard to stay in touch with your culture. But its one thats truly meaningful. So you should be proud to be Chinese, because being Chinese rocks!... and Im not the only one who thinks so. [Lucy Liu]: I think the most important thing for kids to recognize is that its something to be proud of! Film star Lucy Liu is speaking to students at the school MS 131, in Manhattans Chinatown. Its at the event What Is American Music? The Asian Influence. Local kids hear the Chinese-American actress share the profound effect that Chinese culture has had on her, since she was growing up like them, right here in New York. [Lucy Liu]: I grew up not really knowing what I had until much later on as I was growing up I discovered that it was something that really opened up my eyes and made my world bigger instead of smaller, understanding the language and understanding the culture. Before autographs, photos, and chatting with the days star guest, the kids are treated to a performance featuring members of top chamber orchestra the Orchestra of St. Lukes. The tunes and accompanying dances are by successful Chinese-American artists. And it seems Chinese tradition is something that everyone, young and old, can appreciate. [Lucy Liu]: Also it helped me embrace my family because ...

Wooden movable-type printing of China
Duration : 590 Seconds

UNESCO: List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding - 2010 URL: www.unesco.org Description: One of the world's oldest printing techniques, wooden movable-type printing is maintained in Rui'an County, Zhejiang Province, where it is used in compiling and printing clan genealogies. Men are trained to draw and engrave Chinese characters, which are then set into a type-page and printed. This requires abundant historical knowledge and mastery of ancient Chinese grammar. Women then undertake the work of paper cutting and binding, until the printed genealogies are finished. The movable characters can be used time and again after the type-page is dismantled. Throughout the year, craftspeople carry sets of wooden characters and printing equipment to ancestral halls in local communities. There, they compile and print the clan genealogy by hand. A ceremony marks the completion of the genealogy, and the printers place it into a locked box to be preserved. The techniques of wooden movable-type printing are transmitted through families by rote and word of mouth. However, the intensive training required, the low income generated, popularization of computer printing technology and diminishing enthusiasm for compiling genealogies have all contributed to a rapid decrease in the number of craftspeople. At present, only eleven people over 50 years of age remain who have mastered the whole set of techniques. If not safeguarded, this traditional practice will soon ...

Description SP65TIP: Titanium Lum Chinese Spyderco Who the heck is Bob Lum? You may not have heard of him yet, but you will. A custom knifemaker of Chinese heritage, Bob takes traditional Asian knife designs and infuses them with all things modern. Case in point is the C65TIP Spyderco Bob Lum Chinese Folder. US and China: Love & Hate: Why China is hated? 中美愛与恨:為何恨中国?
Duration : 447 Seconds

It was said: World peace through world trade. Maybe it is better to say: World peace through world understanding. Given the current hi-tech environment with instant communication, 24-hour news and global village accessibility, it is amazing there are still so much misunderstanding (myth, bias, prejudice, etc) between two major cultures, America and China. Being an American with Chinese heritage, I hope to serve as a bridge to clear up some of the misunderstandings... and promote fair and equal treatment in the media. I believe we can accomplish it by more critical thinking: Is it really? Can we do better? I forget where I heard this quote: If we cannot let what we don't understand survive, humanity has no future. I hope humanity can combine our talents together to work for global projects, eg to cure cancers, to develop green energy, to search for another earth-like planet out there in the galaxy, etc. ++++++++++++++++++ News media watch misunderstanding myth bias prejudice China USA America Taiwan Tibet Xinjiang separatist myth busted world peace fair equal treatment democracy diversity culture global Asia Europe forbidden communication truth Free Chinese history protest violence 中国华夏西藏自治区主权中华monk news documentary DALAI LAMA

The Art of Yuqi Wang
Duration : 422 Seconds

Yuqi Wang (b.1958) was trained in China and the US and is now based in New York. Among others, he is a member of The American Society of Portrait Artists, The Portrait Society of America and The Oil Painter Association of China and has exhibited extensively across China and America. His work hangs in public collections in China and the collection of the Japanese Royal Family. The influence of Rossetti and Burne-Jones is unmistakable, and in the tradition of the Pre-Raphaelites Yuqi manages to create work which is as sensitive as it is powerful. "What draws me, as an artist, to put brush to canvas is at once both public and private. The world I reveal is a blend of both the 'Occident' and the 'Orient'; my passion for both Classic European portraiture and the Pre-Raphaelite movement is gently kissed by my Chinese heritage. I find the classic styles to be timeless, with a warmth and honesty not offered any more with modern movements." (Yuqi Wang) Music by Budd/Foxx, 'Raindust'.

Searching For Confucius
Duration : 153 Seconds

Does Confucianism have relevance today or was it simply a tool of the elite to repress the underclass? For 2500 years Confucius has cast a long and tantalizing shadow. So influential and pragmatic is his philosophy that anyone of Chinese origin must have some knowledge of this ancient sage's work to truly understand their heritage. For the rest of humanity, whether realized or not, the old philosopher has left his mark on just about everyone's way of thinking. This hour-long documentary tells the story of a modern day quest to rediscover Confucius by examining his life and times. The program's host, Canadian-born writer Wayson Choy, grew up in an immigrant household where Confucian principles were strictly adhered. Such tradition brought suffering to a family struggling to make its way in an alien world, but it also produced a strong backbone, self-discipline and an important code of behavior. Wayson travels to China, the homeland of his parents, where he walks in Confucius' footsteps. He travels to a cave in the village of Zouyi where Confucius was born over 2500 years ago and completes the journey at the Confucius Cemetery where the philosopher died in 479 BC It's a dramatic, picturesque and exciting journey. Along the way, our host talks with authorities on Confucius philosophy as well as ordinary people. We learn that Confucius was the first private teacher in China who believed that education makes the man; that adhering to one's ethics is more important than ...
