ATACAMA DESERT Chile
Duration : 593 Seconds

The Atacama Desert is situated in South America in the north of Chile and, at its centre, is the most arid region on Earth with salt water lakes, desert mountain areas and endless fields of sand dunes and stone in which the forces of nature have formed an extraordinary landscape. The Atacama extends between the Pacific Ocean and the Cordilleras. An area of stone and sand that is perforated only by various frequently dried out salt lakes. Salar De Atacama contains several water basins that become flooded with the waters of the Rio San Pedro that has a high mineral content. The largest and most accessible lagoon is that of the Lago Chaxa. It is inhabited by wildlife that is able to obtain its nourishment from salt water. The Valle De La Luna is particularly impressive and in primeval times was a lake whose bed was elevated and developed due to tectonic activity. When the setting sun throws its shadows onto the landscape, the play of colour is quite remarkable and the Atacama Desert is transformed once again into a land of enchantment and mystique.

EASTER ISLAND Rapa Nui, Chili
Duration : 598 Seconds

Around 3500 kilometres west of the mainland of Chile is the Pacific island of Rapa Nui, otherwise known as Easter Island. Three million years ago, volcanic activity created this small island of lava that covers an area of 160 square kilometres. Rapa Nui is one of the most remote places on Earth, and its closest neighbor is Pitcairn Island more than 2000 kilometres west. Since its discovery by Dutch sailor Jakob Roggeveen on Easter Sunday 1722, there has been a great deal of interest in the island. In spite of its growing tourist trade, the island has retained an air of tranquility and is ideal for nature lovers and those interested in its history. Theories abound as to who were the first settlers to arrive on this tiny island, but scientists believe that its first inhabitants originated from Eastern Polynesia. But the island's main focal points are its gigantic and mysterious stone monuments that date back to late pre-historic times. These mighty statues have always stimulated a certain amount of fantasy, as the island was thought to be part of a lost continent. Nearly all the mighty figures, known as Moai, originated from the slopes of the Rano Raraku Volcano. Its Tuff stone was an ideal sculpting material and its soft texture made it possible for the islanders to create tall, massive statues out of the rock within only a few weeks. There are still almost 400 individually crafted Moai figures on the island. During the 19th century, slave traders arrived and took with ...

ISLA GRANDE DE CHILOE Chile
Duration : 1553 Seconds

The Isla Grande De Chiloes located off the west coast of southern Chile in the Pacific Ocean. It features amazing timber-built churches, an undulating landscape and villages supported by posts. In the small village of Chacao there is a large wooden church one of more than a hundred and fifty that are scattered across the island. Two wooden towers with blue peaks flank the main entrance gate. Striking architecture that unites European design with that of this region. Everything is made of wood with not a single nail used. Fourteen of the churches have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites since the year 2000. When in 1567 the Spaniard, Francisco De Ulloa, discovered the island, he founded Castro, its imposing cathedral having been built in 1906. It has two pointed towers on its facade and the main building is coloured salmon pink. The church's interior contains brownish colours with circular wooden columns and a beautiful, carved altar. Castro is the island's oldest town and also the capital of Chilorovince. Along the waterfront are numerous colourful wooden houses on posts, the Palafitos. When viewed from the street, the houses look like normal buildings but from the coast it can be seen that they are supported by wooden posts. At high tide the fishermen are able to land by boat directly beneath the houses and at low tide the posts are exposed in full. Today the people of Chiloe live from agriculture and fishing and tourism is also becoming increasingly important.

HIGHLAND TRAIL Chile
Duration : 1553 Seconds

From the coastal cities in the north of Chile, the ancient trading routes of the Incas lead into the remoteness of the Andes and into the vastness of the Altiplano with its mountain villages, lakes and salt flats plus snow-covered volcanoes. We commence our journey in Arica, the northernmost and fifth oldest city in Chile. In the sixteenth century, silver treasures from Potosi was transported by mule caravan and loaded onto Spanish ships. The Valle De Azapa is a valley of the Rio San Jose hat is a fertile oasis. The green valley and its many olive trees has a long history. The earliest people to live here grew crops and today the plantations contain olive trees, bananas, mangos, passion fruit and dates. Putre, the only large settlement on the old Inca route, lies at an altitude of three thousand five hundred metres above sea level. It lies sheltered on a mountain ridge at the foot of the snow-covered peaks of the Andes. The plaza is the centre of the town's administration and also contains the Iglesia De Putre that is said to have once been adorned with silver and gold. Nature, highland oases and old mountain villages have all been a part of this fascinating journey. A journey that has reached its conclusion in the canyons of the Andes and which began in the Catholic coastal town of Arica, forming the splendid Ruta Del Altiplano!

SANTIAGO DE CHILE -THE BEST PLACE TO GO IN 2011 by sebastian
Duration : 410 Seconds

SANTIAGO DE CHILE, THE BEST PLACE TO GO IN 2011, ACCORDING TO THE NEW YORK TIMES! Undaunted by an earthquake, a city embraces modern culture. Less than a year after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake wreaked havoc in Chile, its capital, Santiago, has largely recovered, the economy continues to grow, and tourism is in an upswing. Though the quake, which caused hundreds of casualties, was centered more than 200 miles away, many of Santiago's older buildings were damaged, including the Museum of Fine Arts. But the earthquake last year — and another in Chile last week that caused more panic than damage — seems to have only briefly paused a cultural shift that had begun to take hold in the city. Known as a buttoned-up place, Santiago has in recent years added modern museums, smartly designed hotels and sophisticated restaurants. The city has become decidedly more vibrant. This year, it has even been chosen as the first foreign city to host a rather unbuttoned event: Lollapalooza. The 20-year-old American music festival picked Santiago for its first overseas outing because of its open space and the variety of cultural offerings, and because locals have a passion for contemporary music, said Lollapalooza's founder, the musician Perry Farrell. The festival takes place in April in O'Higgins Park. This musical awakening owes much to the government's investment in the arts. The new Centro Gabriela Mistral, for example, a 200000-square-foot center made of glass and weathering steel, has a ...

Collecting Calyptraeid Snails in Chile
Duration : 835 Seconds

In 2010 Dr. Rachel Collin visited her colleagues at the Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia to collect some very special snails for her research at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Panama. This video shows some highlights from her trip. Video by: Rachel Collin Edited by: Rebecca Rissanen Collin Lab Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Panama, 2011 Research in the Collin Lab focuses on the evolution of life histories and development of marine invertebrates. Our current work, supported by the US National Science Foundation, uses marine slipper limpets (Calyptraeidae) to try to understand the evolutionary loss and possible reacquisition of feeding larvae. The Collin Lab is located in Panama City, Panama, at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's Naos Marine Laboratories, but our field work takes us to various other countries in the Americas. We hope that the videos on this YouTube channel give you an introduction to the faces in the Collin Lab, as well as a taste of the kinds of projects we are working on.

CHILE
Duration : 3110 Seconds

Chile was given its name by the Incas who respectfully called it Chili, 'the country in the south'. Santiago De Chile, the capital of Chile, is dignified, modest and European-looking and also lively, modern and full of Latin temperament. The Plaza De Armas is the heart of the city and the historic centre of colonial Santiago that contains the city's most important buildings. The city of Valparaiso or, Paradise Valley, is around a hundred and twenty kilometres from the capital of Santiago De Chile on the Pacific coast. The city's development was closely connected with its harbour which brought it wealth and power. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, escalators have rattled up and down the steep hills of the harbour city with forty five hills flanking the bay, each of them covered with a number of tiny wooden huts. Only a short journey on a gravel road and the Atacama Desert begins. At its centre it is the driest desert in the world where the forces of nature have turned it into an extraordinary landscape. The Atacama extends between the Pacific Ocean and the Cordilleras, an area of stone and sand that is perforated only by various frequently dried out salt lakes. For those ships that sailed around Cape Horn, Ancud represented a safe harbour on the journey north in which they could rest after sailing the stormy waters of the South Pacific. At a time when whales and seals were hunted in the Antarctic, Ancud served as a supply station along the route to the southern ...
