Earlier this month a Chilean judge decided to reopen an investigation into the death of folk singer Victor Jara; whose murder become a national symbol in the fight against human rights abuses. Joan Jara, Victor's widow, joins Sir David. She says it is important for Chilean society that justice is done. Jara says it will help the country look towards the future.

Benedict XVI today received in private audience the president of Chile, who also held talks with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State, and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States. Issues of mutual interest were addressed, such as human life and the family, education, human rights, justice and peace and other important questions on the international agenda. The president did not fail to emphasize the positive contribution made by the Catholic Church to Chilean society, especially in areas of social well being and education. The talks also allowed an exchange of information on the socio-political situation of the country and the Church's role in Latin America.

With nearly 40 years of experience as a cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Zamorano joined the Arizona Heart Institute in January 2008. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chile in Santiago, Chile in 1971. After completing his General Surgery Residency at San Borja Hospital in Santiago, Chile, he completed a Fellowship in Cardiac and Vascular Surgery at the Arizona Heart Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Zamorano spent four years in private practice in Payson, Arizona before returning to Santiago where he began the development of the San Borja Hospital's Cardiovascular Program in Santiago, Chile. Dr. Zamorano directed the Cardiovascular Surgical Program at San Borja Hospital, a 600 bed facility referral center for cardiovascular disease, in addition to working as an assistant professor at the University of Chile Medical School and Residency Program. Dr. Zamorano's memberships include the Board of the Chilean Society of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, member of the Cardiovascular Surgery Examiner Commission for cardiovascular specialty in the University of Chile Medical School post graduate, International Society for Endovascular Surgery, International Society of Endovascular Specialists and the Edward B. Diethrich Vascular Surgical Society among others. Dr. Zamorano provides services at the Arizona Heart Institute Payson Clinic, including Cardiac Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Cardiology at the Payson Regional Medical Center and at the Arizona Heart Hospital.

On July 31, 2009, the outstanding Chilean band Inti-Illimani played a memorable concert at Americas Society for a capacity audience. The group revisited some of their classic hits, including Victor Jara's Vientos del pueblo and Hamlet Lima Quintana and René Cosentino's Juanito Laguna remonta un barrilete, and also performed music from their latest albums, such as their own Rondombe and the rousing cumbia, Sobre tu playa, which closed the concert.
