Claudio Nelson Bravo Camus was a Chilean painter realist who lived and worked in Tangiers, Morocco from 1972 until the day of his death. For family of farmers, lived much of his childhood in the rural area of Melipilla. Come forward, my daughter, take care. She's very brave! She's expecting a baby, and yet she comes here. You could see his strength and at the same time, his naturalness, his joy, it was great. FIFTY 24PDX Gallery presents "Dolores, Las Lagrimas Y Las Rosas", an exhibit of new paintings and works on paper from Chilean artist Basco. Featuring a two-dimensional realism that is striking for its simplicity and confrontational playfulness, Basco works in his Santiago studio and on the streets of various South American cities. He is a young artist, influenced as much by "traditional" painters such De Kooning, Rothko, Motherwell, and Miro as he is by his South American contemporaries like Herbert Baglione, Vitche, Os Gemeos, Nunca, and Blu. For his first solo show in Portland, Basco has brought together a selection of works on paper and new paintings in his signature style. Some months ago he stumbled upon a vast collection of vintage magazines from Argentina & Chile. Using the hand-drawn images by "manterola" artists and hand-painted photographs from the vintage ephemera, Basco moved his work in a new direction of mixed media, restructuring the faces and images of 1930s- & '40s-era South America. "Dolores" runs from February 7th, 2008 through March 23rd, 2008.

Roberto Antonio Sebastián Matta Echaurren (November 11, 1911 November 23, 2002), usually known as Matta, was one of Chile's and France's and America's best-known painters and a seminal figure in 20th century art. Born in Santiago, he initially studied architecture at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, but became disillusioned with this occupation and left for Paris in 1933. His travels led him to meet artists such as René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, André Breton, and Le Corbusier. It was Breton who provided the major spur to the Chilean's direction in art, encouraging his work and introducing him to the leading members of the Paris Surrealist movement. Matta produced illustrations and articles for Surrealist journals such as Minotaure. During this period he was introduced to the work of many prominent contemporary European artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp. The first true flowering of Matta's own art came in 1938, when he moved from drawing to the oil painting for which he is best known. This period coincided with his emigration to the United States, where he lived until 1948. His early paintings, such as Invasion of the Night, give an indication of the work he would continue, with diffuse light patterns and bold lines on a featureless background.
