www.volunteerabroad.ie EIL, the Chilean Ministry of Education and the United Nations Development Program are seeking native English speakers to work as volunteer English language teaching assistants in schools as part of the efforts to improve language skills among Chilean school students. The program is a collaboration between the volunteers and Chilean EFL teachers. Each volunteer is a real support in the classroom and for many the only chance to practice with an English speaker. Volunteers dont specifically have to have previous teaching experience as they work hand in hand with the EFL teacher. The first believers in Christ appeared in Chile in the sixteenth century but for various reasons, countries evangelised by the Spaniards were not empowered to set up contemplative orders. The Spaniards encouraged and facilitated the establishment of active orders only. That is why the likes of the Carmelites or Benedictine or Clarist orders arrived only after independence - not until the nineteenth century. The great shortage and need for contemplative convents continues to burden this Church. Viewed through the perspective of Teresa of Jesus of Los Andes, the first Chilean saint and a Carmelite nun, the program considers the role of cloistered convents in Chile and the impact and support that this provides for the faithful and society.

Hugo Ulises Antipani Oyarzo, a speaker and teacher of Huilliche (Willichesungun) languages, talks about the state of the language and community on Chiloe Island, Chile. Wequetrumao, Chiloe Island, Chile. 11 Jan 2011. Summary -- Hugo Antipani is a native of Compu, Chile, the youngest fluent speaker of Huillichesungun and a teacher of that language to children ages 6-14 in four schools in Wequetrumao, a community of Chiloe Island. In this interview he attests to the continuing importance of Huilliche to the culture of his community and describes the ongoing efforts to maintain its presence amongst the community's youth. For Hugo, Huilliche continues to be the language of family gathering and spiritual ceremonies, and the repository of indigenous knowledge. He says Mapuche (or Mapudungun), a sister language in the region, is "the mother of the Huilliche language, its origin." He claims that although Huilliche is a "linguistic variant," they share many cognates, such as familial terms, names of animals, last names, and place names. Although Hugo acknowledges that only a dozen or so speakers of Huilliche remain, he envisions a "very hopeful future" through "work with the children" in the language. He makes reference to one such student, now studying at university, who intends to return after graduation to his community to help with language revitalization. UNICEF has just released the 'Top 10 Cartoons for Children's Rights', as selected by polling broadcasters and communicators, to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Cartoons for Children's Rights is a UNICEF broadcast initiative that aims to inform people around the world about children's rights. So far, the effort has forged partnerships with many well-known animation studios that have developed more than 80 half-minute public service announcements (PSAs). Each PSA illustrates a right described in the global rights treaty, such as 'Freedom from Child Labour' or 'Protection from Neglect'. All the spots are non-verbal, in order to get the rights message across to everyone, regardless of language.
