UNESCO: Article 18 of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The proposed sub-regional project aims at developing safeguarding measures to ensure the viability of the oral expressions, music and traditional knowledge (textile art and agricultural technologies) of the Aymara communities of Bolivia (La Paz-Oruro-Potosí), Chile (Tarapacá-Arica-Parinacota-Antofagasta) and Peru (Tacna-Puno-Moquegua). The activities, planned for implementation over the course of a five-year project, are: (i) identifying and inventorying the traditional knowledge and oral traditions of Aymara communities in the selected areas, (ii) strengthening language as a vehicle for transmission of the intangible cultural heritage through formal and non-formal education, (iii) promoting and disseminating Aymara oral and musical expressions and (iv) reinforcing traditional knowledge related to the production of textile arts and traditional agricultural techniques. These four lines of action of the planned project have been established as priorities by the Aymara communities in the different phases of consultation and preparation of the project and they will be implemented with the full involvement of the communities, guided by the 2003 Conventions principles. The project intends to adopt as its working strategy the creation of a subregional and international network comprising individuals, communities, groups, cultural managers, specialists, indigenous ...

We describe the Zamacueca as the Mother Dance of the Americas because it has spawned an infinite number of folkloric "children" in Latin America, including the Marinera of Peru, Zamba of Argentina, the Cuecas of Chile and Bolivia, the Chilena of Mexico, and early California dances of the gold rush era. It is living proof that America has had a multicultural identity that is still manifests itself today. Over time, the Zamacueca has been a motif of celebration, gallantry, romance, independence, identity, struggle, and academic research. Above all, it has always been a unifying force throughout Latin America. The Zamacueca has its principle roots in the Fandango of 16th-century Spain. This Embryonic dance form, which was first imported to the coastal area of Peru, has been reinvented many times. In Peru, the Zamacueca is today called "Marinera de Lima." It is our national dance that, while representing Peru, also emphasizes the authoritative role of women. Our composition pays tribute to the legacy left in Peru by women of African descent. Chile - All Ways Surprising
Duration : 338 Seconds

A Chilean legend maintains that after God had created the wonders of the world he had many pieces leftover. He had raging rivers, sprawling glaciers, valleys and soaring mountains, snow-capped volcanoes, sparkling lakes, beautiful forests and deserts, icy fjords and sandy beaches. Rather than let all this beauty go to waste, he put them together in a remote part of the world, and so Chile was born. Shaped like a long narrow strip and making up the western part of South America's tail, it is 2610 miles (4200km) in length and at most 115 miles (180km) wide. Travelers are drawn to this country because of its multitude of natural attractions, from the northern desert to the Lake District, and the mountains and fjords of Patagonia in the south. It has some superb National Parks, including Easter Island famous for its mysterious giant statues, and numerous activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Chile's European heritage is evident throughout the country and travelers here are likely to feel more familiar with its culture than those of the neighboring countries, with their strongly indigenous lifestyles. There are still local traditions persisting in parts of Chile however, and together with the European influence this makes for an interesting juxtaposition, providing a distinctive culture. The people are resilient, cordial and warm, from the fashionable capital city of Santiago to the isolated island of Chiloé, and Chilean hospitality is renowned. Besides natural beauty and an ...
