Santiago, Chile: Art & Architecture The Plaza De Armas is the heart and soul of Santiago. The most outstanding of the buildings on the Plaza is the Santiago Cathedral. The current cathedral was constructed in 1747 even though at least three churches occupied the same site since the early 16th century. The building is the most commanding of any of the buildings on the square. Although you don't get a full indication of its size until you walk down the adjacent street to see its full majesty. There is a series of public buildings on the north side of the square. The Correo Central (Central Post Office) is at the site of the former Governor's Residence. Further down the street is the Cuartel De Bomberos which is the site of the City's oldest fire station. On the east side of the Plaza is the Municipalidad de Santiago (City Hall) and also the Museo Histórico Nacional.

Pilar Ortiz watching time go by my bedroom window Country: Chile Year: 2008 Duration: 5'14'' This work explores the changing landscape of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, through the dissection of a window view. Pieces of the newly built skyline are opposed to a local scene that illustrates the life that will be lost, raising questions about the process of redevelopment that is sweeping across New York City. Pilar Ortiz is a Chilean architect and media artist who studies the ongoing transformations of cities and cultural expression in public spaces. She's currently pursuing an MFA in Integrated Media Arts at Hunter College. Her investigations, video projects, and installations have addressed issues such as temporary cities, public housing, urban segregation, urban redevelopment, and public space as a terrain for social interaction. From the Plaza de Armas. walk two blocks to the east by Avenida Cartagena, No. 495 on the street corner to Arica. Sa is the House with Gallery, which accounts for property outside influences of the time, by the year 1910. Wealthy families sought to create imitations of European spas, mainly from France, who lived his Belle Epoque, which can be seen through the decoration of glazed gallery overlooking Cartagena Av. This house is built by mixing various architectural styles, which is known as the eclectic architectural mix in this case characteristics of Chilean architecture of the early twentieth century styles prevalent in Europe. Leading in Cartagena Av No. 501, we find the Casa Castillo Diaz, property acquired in the first decade of the twentieth century by Osvaldo Castillo, one of the pioneers of Cartagena capitalists. This house also serving as a summer resort was occupied by Sacred Carlota Diaz, a member of the family remembered in the industry to transform a room into an oratory to be used in liturgical ceremonies. This house keeps within its walls the intense social life that enveloped the routine vereanantes families who not only enjoyed the benefits of sun, beaches and sea, but also their luxury homes. Greg Hall '82 tells students in The Design Process class at Texas A&M's College of Architecture how he formulated the plan that freed 33 trapped Chilean miners -- a story that made headlines around the world in October 2010. Hall, who earned a degree in engineering technology, owns Drillers Supply SA in Chile, Drillers Supply International and DSI American Manufacturing in Minnesota. His lecture was March 22, 2011 in Preston Geren Auditorium. Rodney Hill, professor of architecture, said Hall's problem solving was based on innovation and creativity, two of the main subjects in the class.

Video Presentation for the Exhibition of the I Biennale of Anonymous Architecture presented in the Museum of Contemporary Art Santiago de Chile, 2003. an attempt to show outstanding architectural designs in all across Chile where no architects were involved, by a collection of photos of some important chilean photographers. 'Se entiende el acto fotográfico como una primera aproximación a la realidad, una primera noción de comprensión y apropiación en un territorio vasto. El lugar original se modifica y se vuelve paisaje a través de un registro visual-acto fotográfico-, y luego, un referente posterior de interacción siempre presente- fotografía-. Al momento de obtener la imagen, de algún modo el territorio ha sido medido, - en la medida de la técnica de la cámara y el ojo del fotógrafo- Así, la decisión del encuadre para obtener un registro fotográfico se vuelve un acto compositivo y de pre-diseño, una imagen que es un extracto de un continuo mayor, que se vuelve un nuevo punto de partida. Al momento que se obtiene la fotografía, se define, se aísla una figura, una transformación del territorio original, una mutación que incluso pone en riesgo la noción de lo que se era en realidad. En ese ámbito de ambigüedad una imagen es capaz de hacer múltiples referencias y abrir nuevas relaciones, y por lo tanto abrir el campo de la reflexión y el diseño en la Arquitectura. Una 'profundidad de campo' que ahonda en, nuevos imaginarios, nuevos contextos, nuevas materias y experiencias ...
