CHAN: The Chilean Navy uncovered a "Noah's Ark" of contraband exotic animals, shipped from Peru to Chile. Many of the animals are of endangered species. Based at the naval port of Arica, Chile, the overnight Naval patrol noticed a boat heading for shore with its lights off. After checking for a registration, the authorities discovered caged animals on board. Most of the exotic animals were quickly turned over to local maritime authorities. [Tomas Orellana, Maritime Commissary]: (Spanish male soundbite) "In total, with all in agreement on the final count, there were around 400 animals that were being held captive, including macaws, parrots, toucan birds, marine turtles, squirrels and other species." The complete count of the contraband was 308 marine turtles, 40 land turtles, 25 squirrels, 20 each of macaws and parrots and 11 alligators. Some of the species on board are also facing the threat of extinction, including the arawana parrot. The boat, sailing under the name of "Rosa Isabel," departed from the Peruvian beach town of Los Palos, just 10 kilometers north of the Chilean-Peruvian border. The vessel was then headed for Arica, whose current black market rates would have put the total worth of the animals at around $56000 US dollars. A short and minimal film about my experience with animals condemned to death in Chile. The most perfect creatures sent to their deaths after a short painful life in captivity. The reason I think for our violent political past and the reason we cannot ever be happy as a nation. The perpetual abuse and cruelty towards our animal brothers and sisters. The short piece carries the name of the book by Charles Patterson, "Eternal Treblinka" a book that has changed my life. Shot with a pocket Flip camera , edited on a Mac. Dedicated to my friend Adriana De La Garza who has taught me the little I know about animal rights . Dedicated also to the young vet student that appears at the end of my short film who´s holding the calf´s head before she´s put in a bag, sealed with a piece of wire- kicked into the back of a pickup truck and sent to die in a chinese restaurant in Santiago. I hope one day no veterinarians will participate in any way in the horrific meat industry that they will be taught in school that doctors cannot become accomplices of this ugly trade. Footage from a traffic camera overlooking a busy freeway in Santiago, Chile captured a dog performing a heroic act — pulling an injured friend from oncoming traffic. The video shows an injured dog lying in the middle of a freeway after being hit by a car, while a rescue dog dodges traffic to run to its side. The rescue dog then drags the severely injured canine across lanes of traffic as cars swerve around it. No motorists stopped to help either dog, but a highway crew arrives at the end of the video. The translation of the announcer is as follows: "These images seen from the surveillance cameras show a very common situation with our overpopulated highways. It is normal for us to see dogs run over. In the video, we can see this dog fighting for his life because he was run over by the vehicle. "What is very touching is to see the very heroic actions of this other dog who is trying to pull him to the side of the highway. We are going to keep seeing things like this until we find a solution to the dogs living on the streets."

Mink Invasion - new exotic animals on Navarino Originally from North America, the mink´s first appearance on the southern Chilean island of Navarino near Cape Horn in 2001 was completely unexepted. In the 1930s, the mink (Mustela vison) was brought to Argentina for its precious fur and kept in fur farms. Now the animals have swum `unchecked´ along the Beagle channel and have discovered a new home in Navarino´s bird paradise - to the detriment of the native animal species and the despair of Navarino´s farmers. The biological diversity of Chile´s newest UNESCO biosphere reserve is under threat and conservationists are alarmed. The film documents the fieldwork of the biologist Elke Schüttler and illustrates the drama and the threat of invasive animal species at the `world´s southern tip´. The Nilahue and GolGol rivers near the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano are set to burst its banks after its flow increased from 30 cubic meters per second to 160 cubic meters per second. In towns bordering the fiery mount, authorities have warned of imminent flooding after 3500 residents were evacuated. While 500 of them were still in shelters, authorities seek legal permission to evacuate a dozen more who refused to leave their property and animals behind. The weather has forced many planes in South America to remain grounded for a third straight day. Al Jazeera's Craig Mauro reports from Puyehue.
