WONG: Six French members of the aid group Zoe's Ark were sentenced last month to eight years hard labour in Chad for trying to kidnap dozens of children. But their sentence was converted into eight years jail terms by a Paris court on Monday because French law does not allow forced labour. Here's more. STORY: One of the defence lawyers, Gilbert Collard says that the French President Nicolas Sarkozy should make everything possible to get their pardon. [Gilbert Collard, Defence Lawyer]: "We asked the President of the Republic, who was able to travel to Chad and who managed to get the release of three journalists - - and one of them was involved in the case - - , to mobilise now so that the people sentenced today can get a pardon as soon as possible." The six "Zoe's Ark" members were arrested in Chad in October. They were found guilty last month of attempting to kidnap 103 African children. They were then flown back to France under a judicial cooperation agreement between both countries. The group said they were rescuing orphans from Sudan's war-torn Darfur region, near Chad's eastern border. They were intending to fly the children to Europe for foster families there. But most of the children were found to have come from families in Chadian border villages. The families were persuaded to give up their infants in return for promises of education. Our day started off well, packing the car with our heavier luggage, and sending our driver, Umar, and Bouba down to Goz Beida to meet us when our flight arrives later in the day. We make one last stop at the governors for a stamp and head to the airport. After weighing luggage, and signing the flight manifest, the plane is grounded for the day. According to UNHCR, there is unknown military movement in the area, and all flights and vehicle travel has been temporarily suspended. As we were waiting to confirm a home for the night, we saw several trucks with weapons, and men traveling South towards the region, no doubt military enforcements. For now we remain safe in Abeche. Suzanne has been based in Abeche for 15 months thus far, and from what we can tell enjoys her job as the primary information reporter for all refugee and IDP (internally displaced persons) camps in E. Chad. Like us, she finds it absolutely necessary to be with the women, children and men that her organization works so hard to keep alive. Chad is running out of firewood. In the east of the country, where thousands of Darfur refugees live, the situation is dire. The country banned the use of charcoal and the cutting of living trees. That means the local population and refugees compete for the little dead wood that remains. Usually the collection task falls to women and girls. They are sometimes forced to travel dozens of miles away from the camps to find wood. Away from the protections of the camp, the women risk physical and sexual abuse. Cheddar Got Paper and wife Ms Tresee with their sons, Chad Jr, & Cameron along with their sisters, Shantell and Christie on a road trip to Destin, Florida on Memorial Day weekend, May 29th & 30th, 2011. We had lots of fun. The crowd on the beach was good but not heavy. we easily found a spot to set up our shelter and found space to play in the water. The temp was about 85, with a nice breeze. the sands were cool, the water was warm. Perfect weather. 1st day the water was really calm and relaxing, but the next morning they were really going hard and made for exciting fun. Recommend this trip anytime from Mid-April to July. Sunday, May 29, 2011 8:00 am - Woke up, loaded the SUV with bags and Computer .. lol 9:30 am - Hit the road, stop for gas at SHELL ($70), tank was on E 1030am - Stopped at Wal Mart in Slidell, LA for supplies (goggles, life vest, sun screen, shade tent, beach towels, bottled water, drink cooler - $200) 1130am - McDonald's and Raising Cane's for lunch ($40) 1:00 pm - Bathroom break 1 in Alabama 2:45 pm - Bathroom break 2 in Florida 3:30 pm - Arrived at Destin Beach 6:00 pm - left Destin Beach 6:20 pm - checked in 2 rooms at Holiday Express in Niceville, Florida ($240) 6:40 pm - swam in Hotel pool 8:00 pm - left pool area, went to the room 9:45 pm - Ordered 3 pizzas, cheesy bread, 20 hot wings and a 2 liter Sprite from Pizza Hut ($50) 1200am - Lights out, hit the sack Monday May 30th, 2011 8:15 am - wake up call 8:45 am - Free breakfast (donuts, raisin ...
