He travels under the pretense of doing tribal business. Yet reports are that he travels with an entourage and spends money like the drunken fool he is alleged to be. WONG: Six French members of the aid group Zoe's Ark were sentenced last month to eight years hard labour in Chad for trying to kidnap dozens of children. But their sentence was converted into eight years jail terms by a Paris court on Monday because French law does not allow forced labour. Here's more. STORY: One of the defence lawyers, Gilbert Collard says that the French President Nicolas Sarkozy should make everything possible to get their pardon. [Gilbert Collard, Defence Lawyer]: "We asked the President of the Republic, who was able to travel to Chad and who managed to get the release of three journalists - - and one of them was involved in the case - - , to mobilise now so that the people sentenced today can get a pardon as soon as possible." The six "Zoe's Ark" members were arrested in Chad in October. They were found guilty last month of attempting to kidnap 103 African children. They were then flown back to France under a judicial cooperation agreement between both countries. The group said they were rescuing orphans from Sudan's war-torn Darfur region, near Chad's eastern border. They were intending to fly the children to Europe for foster families there. But most of the children were found to have come from families in Chadian border villages. The families were persuaded to give up their infants in return for promises of education. The court said under French law the facts constituted an "illegal confinement of minors under the age of 15". However, relatives and supporters of the accused activists maintain the group's innocence. [Lucien Lellough, Father of Emilie Lellouch]: "There was no kidnapping! We are not in a country where we kidnap children." [Jeannine Lellough, Mother of Emilie Lellouch]: "They have nothing to feel guilty about. They don't deserve this." Defence lawyers said before the hearing that the original Chadian sentences were not valid because they were imposed in an undemocratic state after a unfair trial.

Our day started off well, packing the car with our heavier luggage, and sending our driver, Umar, and Bouba down to Goz Beida to meet us when our flight arrives later in the day. We make one last stop at the governors for a stamp and head to the airport. After weighing luggage, and signing the flight manifest, the plane is grounded for the day. According to UNHCR, there is unknown military movement in the area, and all flights and vehicle travel has been temporarily suspended. As we were waiting to confirm a home for the night, we saw several trucks with weapons, and men traveling South towards the region, no doubt military enforcements. For now we remain safe in Abeche. Suzanne has been based in Abeche for 15 months thus far, and from what we can tell enjoys her job as the primary information reporter for all refugee and IDP (internally displaced persons) camps in E. Chad. Like us, she finds it absolutely necessary to be with the women, children and men that her organization works so hard to keep alive.
