Watch as Oppenheim shows us this "hip hop" condo project that "samples" from its surroundings, including a Morris Lapidus-designed office. A perforated aluminum skin cloaks the building. One of the challenges: Taking advantage of 2 vacant lots that adjoined a down-on-its luck, but historically important building. The project also seeks to make abstract the condo typology. As with many of Oppenheim's projects, the Montclair takes advantage of "left-over space" to create a "garden of delight."

The project's double-height volumes "read as one urban gesture"; a 100-foot long sculptural fence rings the condo. Oppenheim's favorite design move? A roof-top pool and piazza, with views.

Oppenheim, just 31 when he began designing this $150 million skyscraper, "a microcosm of Miami," says his goal was to create a slender, elegant tower, reduced to its essential elements. Oppenheim, who believes the building compares favorably to its "beefier" neighbors, explains how the dynamic facade is all about functionality--not a decorative folly. We also tour the interiors--an "infrastructure for delight"--and hear Oppenheim reveal that he often finds buildings under construction more beautiful than finished works.

From cutting edge developments in Miami to major international green initiatives, Chad Oppenheim has played an important role in the world of architecture and philanthropy. The international award-winning green architect, and Miami resident opened his home (Villa Allegra) for a laid-back breakfast, to a group of journalists and guests during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim. Among the invited guests were Vogue Latin America and Premier Guide Miami. Chad recently returned from his world tour, visiting Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He discussed future projects, as well as his philanthropic involvement in green designs and green lifestyle.
