Deepa Mehta at Tongues on Fire film festival
Duration : 487 Seconds

Canadian film Director Deepa Mehta at Tongues on Fire film festivals opening night at BAFTA Director talks about her Film Heaven on Earth which got premiered at the festival. She also talks about her new project which is feature version of Midnight's Children with author Salman Rushdie. Produced by Parag Sankhe Camera - Zack Lyon Presenter - Arti Mirwani-Daltry Editor - Parag Sankhe Deepa Mehta is one of Canada's most internationally recognized film directors. Deepa's most notable work is the "elements" trilogy, Fire, Earth and Water. Fire (1996), about two love-deprived sisters-in-law who find solace in each other, was the first of the trilogy to elicit public protest. Encompassing lesbianism and challenging the power imbalance between husbands and wives in contemporary India, the film drew both ire and praise. Earth (1998), which was nominated for three Gemini awards, is a love story set among the struggles of diverse friends during India's 1947 partition from Pakistan. Based on Bapsi Sidwa's novel Cracking India, it depicts the division of both country and friendships during the bloody massacres in the largest forced migration in the history of mankind. Not shying away from controversy, Mehta's final instalment in the elements trilogy would be Water (2005), nominated for nine Genie awards and for an Oscar in 2006. The story of socially marginalized widows who are ostracized in conservative parts of India, the film went through a series of delays as violent protesters ...

DAVID ESSIG-FESTIVAL OF FRIENDS
Duration : 108 Seconds

www.davidessig.com SanDAVID ESSIG was introduced to Canadian audiences in 1971 as a "talented newcomer" at the legendary Mariposa Folk Festival. Now, over 30 years later, he is considered one of Canada's finest interpreters of original, contemporary folk music. Always paying homage to his roots in Bluegrass and Country Blues, David uses these traditions to create new songs that are both timely and timeless. His intense energy and incisive wit have made him a favourite with audiences around the world. David is highly respected as a thoughtful and intelligent songwriter, with Canadian folk standards like "Albert's Cove" and "High Ground" to his credit. His work moves from pieces as contemporary as today's news, to songs that sound as if they were rediscovered from old country blues 78's. These are songs that tell stories and paint portraits that will start you laughing and leave you crying. Equally renowned as an instrumentalist and traditional performer, David is a master of the blues and slide guitar. Whether on the lap-style Weissenborn or the electric Godin guitar, his spontaneous style crosses all the borders between country, blues and the avant-garde. And with his 5/8" socket and a sound that could peel the petunias off your mother's porcelain, he is considered one of Canada's great slide guitarists. In 1986, David became the first Canadian artist to sign with the important Italian label, Appaloosa/IRD, which now issues his recordings world-wide. David's next CD ...

Berkley Springs (David Essig, arr. by Don Ross)
Duration : 204 Seconds

POSTED WITH PERMISSION OF DON ROSS. Recorded at Trinity United Church in Cannington (Ontario, Canada) on Saturday, September 15, 2001. Tuning: FACFCF David Essig's comments on this tune: "I wrote the piece to honour the memory of my mother, Doris Hinkins, who came from the small town of Berkley Springs, West Virginia. I originally wrote it in DADGAD and recorded it that way on the first album I issued as a CD in 1988: Morning Calm. That's where Don Ross first encountered it I believe. He may have also heard me play it live, since we used to do some gigs together back in Ontario and at some Canadian festivals. Don transposed the piece into F tuning which enables him to play some interesting chord inversions. He also added a chord to the piece that's not in the original, but which I've now incorporated into my version as a tribute back to Don." See tommyemmanuel.com for the full post
