A few weeks ago, opposition leader Sam Rainsy was in exile after being sentenced in absentia to 18 months in jail for defaming the Prime Minister. Other government critics were slapped with lawsuits. "We had to be very careful what we said. We didn't know the limits." But now the two men have made up and the pressure is on Rainsy to prove he won't become the PM's poodle. "Realizing that the preliminary results of the election announced by the National Election Commission was fraudulently fixed against their vote, the Cambodian mass took to the street their protest for fairness. The demonstration grew from ten thousand to seventy thousand people by the third week. They cheered, chanted and enthusiastically called for a true democracy. This unprecedented phenomenon threatened Hun Sen's regime. With his dictatorial behavior, Hun Sen ordered his troops to crackdown the peaceful demonstrators and demolish "The Democracy Square". He trucked in thousands of his well-trained soldiers from Kompong Speu to the city to face up to the democratic demonstrators. With the support of Hun Sen's police and military forces, this group waged violence against those peaceful demonstrators, causing countless deaths, injuries and disappearances." Progress made in a recent meeting of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Border Committee is unlikely to be sidetracked by national and regional politics this year, or by Cambodia's chairmanship of Asean, said Chheang Vannarith, director of Cambodia Institute for Cooperation and Peace (CICP). In an interview with VOA Khmer's Sophat Soeung via Skype from Singapore, Chheang Vannarith says that a political solution will be important in the long-term, as will be the role of Asean. Both Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to move forward on technical border issues despite simmering political tensions and that they each will continue to accept the role of Indonesian observers in implementing the International Court of Justice's ruling in July on the border dispute. The Ohio University in Athens, Ohio is holding its fourth Annual Khmer Studies Forum from Friday April 27-29. The annual forum focuses on various aspects of Cambodia. Over 30 participants will present their papers on different topics. Started in 2009 by a group of Cambodian students, the Khmer Forum is a platform to discuss and share information about Cambodian politics, cultures, arts and food.
