| | Cambodian Childrens Painting Project -2 of 3 Duration : 529 Seconds WWW.LETUSCREATE.ORG - Helping underpriviledged children in Cambodia. PART 1 - www.youtube.com PART 3 - www.youtube.com CCPP is a grass roots project that works with underprivileged children in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Our children struggle daily with uncaring or abusive parents, living in extremely impoverished households, lacking regular access to food, clean drinking water and medical care. Our children come from the beaches in the local area, collecting cans and bottles for a meager return or selling bracelets and such to tourists for money. Our objective is to provide these vulnerable children with the opportunity to develop their imagination and skills through artistic expression, and providing them a safe place to play, learn and dream. Through education we strive to provide them an opportunity of a future. At the heart of our work is the belief that education and knowledge is the antidote to poverty and exploitation. | | Mural Painting of Cambodia & Thailand Duration : 379 Seconds The Reamker, which has been enormously influential in all aspects of Cambodian arts and culture, is the Cambodian version of the Indian Ramayana epic. Evidences from inscriptions and iconography show that this epic has existed in Cambodia since the 7th century. However, the oldest surviving text, which is incomplete and composed of two compositions, is said to have been written between the 16th and 18th centuries. When Temple of the Emerald Buddha was built in the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh in 1895, the story of Reamker was selected to be painted on the galleries of the temple and became the only complete version of Reamker in the country. This thesis attempts to explore the sources of inspiration of the Reamker Mural Painting by comparing the Reamker Mural Painting and the Ramakien Mural Painting in the Grand Palace of Thailand in terms of the story, the compositional organization of painting, and the iconography. In addition, the thesis also analyzes the key factors related to similarities and differences found from the comparison. The results show that the Reamker Mural Painting's episodes were composed from Ramakien Mural Painting in the Thai Grand Palace, the Thai Ramakien text by King Rama I, the Reamker I and II texts, the segment of Reamker text called "Vayreap magically put Rama to sleep," and the Reamker oral versions. Although, the painted episodes were adopted from the Thai Palace Mural, the presentations in painting are completely different. Most of ... | | Soknang Chea recent paintings at the Alamance County Arts Council 2011 Duration : 224 Seconds Soknang Chea was born in Cambodia in 1980, graduated with a Bachelor of Philosophy from Royal University of Phnom Penh in 2002 and a Bachelor of Arts from Royal University of Fine Arts in 2005. Having lived his whole life in Cambodia, he moved to the USA in 2007 and now lives in Lexington, North Carolina where he is very much involved in the Cambodian community, as well as owing and operating the S&C Art Gallery in Winston-Salem which shows the works of his compatriots. The style of art favored in Cambodia when he graduated from the University was created by the harsh economic conditions which had prevailed there for decades. A quasi realistic rapidly executed product which could be easily sold to tourists, paintings of a romantic view of peasant life, and scenes of the historic monuments and ruins from ancient times, left little possibility for creativity or self expression for the artist, an academy made trivial and useless. Chea moved to the USA in 2007 where he has found a freedom of expression he did not know before where "I can paint what I want". He is an artist in transition. We must watch to see what he will do with this new found freedom. www.yessy.com soknangchea@yahoo.com Tags :Soknang Chea, Alamance County Arts Council, Grah, khmer Cambodia art painting, Phnom Penh, immigration, Lexington, North Carolina, S&C Art Gallery, Angkor Wat, elephant, candle, Statue of Liberty

| | Cambodian Stories Duration : 180 Seconds Cambodian Stories is Eiko & Koma's multi-disciplinary collaboration with young painters who study and work at the Reyum Institute of Arts and Culture in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In addition to Eiko & Koma, who performe alongside their Cambodian artist colleagues, the creative collaborators includes Reyum Institute founder Daravuth Ly, who functions as Dramaturg, and Cambodian-born music ethnologist Sam-Ang Sam. The performance is approximately 80 minutes without intermission and included two collective, large-scale action-paintings created collaboratively by the performers. The work explores the intersection of these lithe, youthful bodies, the Cambodian landscape and the voices past and present that inhabit it. A traveling exhibition of the artists' paintings, both traditional and innovative, curated by the Reyum Institute faculty, accompanies the tour and serves as a catalyst for cross-cultural, cross-generational community dialogue about tradition, innovation and the role of the artist in fostering change. Artworks are available for sale, with all proceeds to benefit the Reyum Institute of Arts and Culture. It is Eiko & Koma's intention to examine their aesthetic in a larger Asian context by teaching younger people in whose bodies Eiko & Koma feel their movement can genuinely reside. 2006 US tour of Cambodian Stories is co-produced by Asia Soceity, The Reyum Institute of Arts and Culture and Inta. | | Pean Peuv, Memories from the Killing Fields Duration : 386 Seconds PEAN PEUV was born in Cambodian in 1964. His natural talent for drawing and painting was clear even as a child, and his talent was highly developed even before he went to art school. 1975 to 1979 was the period of the Killing Fields when the Khmer Rouge ruling party relocated urban populations to do slave labor in the rice fields. More than two million people, one quarter of the Cambodian population, died from execution, starvation, or sickness during these four years of terror. PeanPeuv was eleven years old when he was sent to the Killing Fields with his family. He watched this genocidal tragedy unfold, losing most of his family and friends. Whenever he could he drew pictures on the ground of what he saw. "I can not forget what happened to me and my family" Pean Peuv said. The Killing Fields ended in 1979. Pean Peuv enrolled in art school in 1981, graduated in 1987 and soon after became a teacher of art in Royal University of Fine Arts in the Cambodian capitol Phnom Penh. He was just twenty-seven years old, but because of his life experiences he was no longer a young man. In 1989 he began working at the Ministry of Art and Culture. Returning to school, he earned a bachelor degree of Public Administrative in 2005 and master degree of art from CUP University in Phnom Penh in 2008. Always painting and actively exhibiting throughout Asia, showing the real life and history of his country, he has been awarded many certificates and gold metals by the Cambodian Government for ... | | The Killing Fields Duration : 368 Seconds en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambodia_under_Pol_Pot_(1975-1979) The worst humanity can muster, a sad epic in the history of man, and not well known in the rest of the world. Pol Pot, leader of the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979, claimed to have eliminated 800000 people, while estimates run as high as 3 million killed not only by death camps and squads, but by the following chaos and starvation. 25 to 30% of the entire country's population at the time. This video features snapshots from Tuol Sleng S-21 prison/extermination camp, where 20000 people went through and there are 7 known survivors. There are paintings done by one of the survivors that show the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge. Photos at the Killing Fields were taken in heavy rain, which washed away the dirt and exposed more bones that were strewn everywhere, even along the PATH we were WALKING ON. I witnessed areas of Cambodia where an entire generation is simply missing. Children are working because there are simply not enough adults to run businesses and do labor. It is a heartbreaking story that must be remembered in order to prevent it from happening again.
