| At US University, a Writer Seeks His Own Path (Cambodia News in Khmer) Duration : 257 Seconds Kho Tararith used to be a moto taxi driver and construction worker in Phnom Penh. Today, he's a writer enrolled with the prestigious literary program at Brown University, in Providence, RI Kho Tararith, who is participating in a one-year fellowship at the university, says he loves to write short stories and poems that examine social issues in Cambodia. He has his own way of doing things. "I've had to pave the way for myself," he told VOA Khmer. "That's what I'm doing. I have my own style, and I write about social issues that I see. I'm an independent writer." Kho Tararith said he wants to maintain his independence, while at the same time promoting Khmer-language literature. "I don't belong to any political party, because if I did, I would lose my independence," he said. "I'd have to write what the party boss wanted me to write." When his year is finished, he said, he wants to find another scholarship to continue his studies in the US. After that, he said he hopes to return to Cambodia to help young writers develop their craft. | | Ancient Cambodia Duration : 468 Seconds Ancient Indo-China The country which is today called Cambodia is only a small fraction of the vast Khmer Empire that controlled much of Indo-China from the ninth to the 13th century AD. At its height, the Khmer Empire consisted of today's Cambodia, Laos, most of southern Vietnam and Thailand, as well as some of the Malay peninsula. Culture The word "Angkor" is derived Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language, of "Nagara" which means "City". Angkor Wat literally means "City of Temple" and Angkor Thom "The Magnificent City". No doubts, the ancient Khmers were great masters of stone carving. As we can see today the unarguable evidences of various Angkor temples lying on the vast plain of Siemreap, or even beyond its present-day border to the Preah Vihear at Dangrek Mountain, Phnomrung and Phimai in Thailand and Wat Phu in Laos. All these were created and carefully crafts by the ancient Khmers in successive centuries. This seems to contradict with the normal and easy-going life of the local Khmer people and villagThe study of Khmer civilization in depth is not easy and pain-taking by the historians and archaeologists. Most of the writing, found after the excavation of Angkor, were carved in the stones which became the unperishable materials against time. Although these evidences are important for us to understand the basic constituency of Khmer society and its chronology, they were mainly concerned with religious rituals, King's praise, and literature of Indian epics of "Ramayana ... | | Cambodia: HEAVEN ON EARTH STONES IN THE SKY (2of2) EN Duration : 451 Seconds The origins of the temple lie in what may be the world's oldest religious text, the Rigveda, one of the four Veda Samhitas of Hindu literature. This text describes the gods of heaven and earth, including the earthly god Vishnu, The Preserver. It is to Vishnu that Angkor Wat is consecrated, and with more than mere symbolic intent. Hindu temples were built to be earthly abodes for the gods. The central sanctuary was the most sacred place, directly in line with the vertical axis of the central spire that provided the connection between the realms of heaven and Earth. The surrounding architecture of the temple would then mirror Hindu cosmology, being essentially a mandala in stone a diagram of the cosmos itself. Furthermore, the Khmer civilization had by the time of Angkor Wat's construction incorporated the idea that a king would, after his death, be transmuted into one of the gods. Hence, it was at Angkor Wat that Suryavarman II, after his death, was believed to reside as Vishnu. Astronomical significance: Astronomy and Hindu cosmology are inseparably entwined at Angkor Wat. Nowhere is this more evident than in the interior colonnade, which is dedicated to a vast and glorious carved mural, a bas-relief illustrating the gods as well as scenes from the Hindu epic the Mahabharata. Along the east wall is a 45-meter (150-foot) scene illustrating the "churning of the sea of milk," a creation myth in which the gods attempt to churn the elixir of immortality out of the milk of time ... | | Cambodia: WHY KHMERS LIKE TO CALL YUON INSTEAD OF VIETNAMESE Duration : 376 Seconds All Cambodian people always like to use the word "Yuon" instead of Vietnamese. Why? Because it's their habit in speaking with their tongue. But the word "Yuon" has appeared in the History of Kampuchea since 1618-1628 during the reign of King Chey Chetha II, when Prey Nokor, Baria and Bien Hoa were illegally seized by Yuon land plunderers. Khmer Rouge literature in the 1970s frequently referred to the Vietnamese as Yuon (barbarian), a term dating from the Angkorian period. In the dictionary of Kampuchea of Chuon Nath on Page 985, it clearly describes the word "Yuon": Noun. The race of Tonkin, Annam, Cochin Chine: Yuon Tonkin, Yuon Annam, Yuon Cochin Chine; common words are used very often to call Yuon Tonkin as Yuon Hanoi, Yuon Annam as Yuon Hue, Yuon Cochin Chines as Yuon Prey Nokor. Like his comrades in China and Vietnam, he (Pol Pot) knew how manipulate the "modern, scientific" theories of Marxist Leninism to give legitimate expression to ancient racist attitude and cultural animosities. "National liberation" wars began against European colonial powers and continued against neighbors who were historic enemies. Vietnamese communists called the Chinese communists, "Han chauvinists," when began their feud. The Cambodian communists would call the Vietnamese communists "Youn," which they used to mean savage, when they would both go to war in 1978. So we can see clearly the word "Yuon", in which doesn't mean as too far many foreigners who can't read both Yuon and Khmer ...
