Concrete Visions
Duration : 1002 Seconds

Concrete Visions 2007 The architect Vann Molivann, who survived the Khmer Rouge Regime in Swiss exile, returned in 1991 at 80 years of age. Today, his buildings still play an important role in the character of the city of Phnom Penh. In April of 2005 Helen Grant--Ross, an Art historian and architect from the NGO (Non-governmental-organisation) "Khmer Heritage", and Nico Mesterharm, interviewed Vann Molivann for the on-going documentary project "Concrete Visions". We showed him a 40-year-old film recording from the Cambodian Palace archive. The old man began to cry as he watched the rare footage of film, because it demonstrated the high developmental standards of the country, after the liberation from the French occupation, and also because it showed the unfulfilled dream of a Southeast Asian model state. Mr. Cheunboran Chanboray, Research Fellow, Cambodia Institute for Cooperation and Peace, provided the views from Cambodia.

Khmer Architecture
Duration : 555 Seconds

In Cambodia after Khmer empire collapsed trees have grown among ruins and forest swallow temples and cities creating this great atmosphere and revealing the impermanent side of life. Angkor Wat, the world's largest single religious monument, is just one of over one thousand temples that is possible to see in this area. In 2007 an international team of researchers using satellite photographs concluded that Angkor had been the largest preindustrial city in the world. Several religious movements contributed to the historical development of religion at Angkor but most of the temples are Buddhist or dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu. Together they comprise the most significant site of Khmer architecture.

Around the World (12) - Angkor Wat & Angkor Thom (Cambodia)
Duration : 538 Seconds

ANGKOR WAT is a temple complex at Angkor, Cambodia, built for the king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation -- first Hindu, dedicated to the god Vishnu, then Buddhist. It is the world's largest religious building. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors. Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple mountain and the later galleried temple, based on early South Indian Hindu architecture, with key features such as the Jagati. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs, and for the numerous devatas (guardian spirits) adorning its walls. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) ANGKOR THOM ("Great City"), located in present day Cambodia, was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer ...

Oh! Phnom Penh
Duration : 354 Seconds

Phnom Penh, the Capital City of Cambodia. Some important places and monuments in Phnom Penh: WATT PHNOM A small hill crowned by an active wat (pagoda) marks the legendary founding place of the Phnom Penh. The hill is the site of constant activity, with a steady stream of the faithful trekking to the vihear, shrines and fortune tellers on top, and a constellation of vendors, visitors and motodups at the bottom. Elephant rides available. The legend of the founding of Wat Phnom is tied to the beginnings of Phnom Penh. Legend has it that in 1372 Lady Penh (Yea Penh) fished a floating Koki tree out of the river. Inside the tree were four Buddha statues. She built a hill ('phnom' means 'hill') and a small temple (wat) at what is now the site of what is now known as Wat Phnom. Later, the surrounding area became known after the hill (Phnom) and its creator (Penh), hence 'Phnom Penh.' The current temple was last rebuilt in 1926. The large stupa contains the remains of King Ponhea Yat (1405-1467) who moved the Khmer capital from Angkor to Phnom Penh in 1422. Look for the altar of Lady Penh between the large stupa and the vihear. She is said to be of particular help to women. ........................................... NATIONAL MUSEUM The distinctive rust-red National Museum next to the Royal Palace was dedicated by King Sisowath in 1920. Over 5000 objects are on display including Angkorian era statues, lingas and other artifacts, most notably the legendary statue of the 'Leper King ...
