| Cambodia: HISTORY OF ANGKOR (1of6) [EN] Duration : 600 Seconds Traditionally, the history of Angkor as we know it from inscriptions and the existing temples begins in the ninth century, when the young king Jayavarman II declared himself the supreme sovereign and established his capital first near present-day Roluos, and a little later in the Kulen Mountains. Up to that point, Khmer history had been that of small independent states occasionally consolidating into larger empires, but never for long. It took a conqueror to establish the beginnings of one of Southeast Asia's most powerful empires. The Angkor region, bordering the Great Lake with its valuable supply of water, fish, and fertile soil, has been settled since neolithic times, as is known from stone tools and ceramics found there, and from the identification of circular habitation sites from aerial photographs. For the whole Khmer country, there is more descriptive evidence from the accounts of the Chinese, who began to trade and explore the commercial opportunities of mainland Southeast Asia in the early centuries of the Christian era. The picture is one of small town-states, moated, fortified and frequently in conflict with each other. The Chinese called the principal country with which they traded Funan; it had a strategic importance in controlling the sea routes around the Mekong delta and the Gulf of Thailand. In particular it controlled the narrow Isthmus of Kra - the neck of the Malay Peninsula -which connected eastern Asia with India. Indeed, it was trade with India ... | | Cambodia: HISTORY OF ANGKOR (4of6) [EN] Duration : 600 Seconds The temples as seen today give only a sketchy idea of the total number of shrines which bejewelled the land of the Khmers, many of which must have disappeared over the centuries. They are in durable materials, and, as such, they imply considerable wealth on the part of their builders. They were far from being the only Hindu shrines in the Khmer countryside, as others were built by the less wealthy in perishable materials. The inscriptions reveal that sometimes there were years of delay before enough funds were availabe for a stone or laterite shrine for a divinity, and doubtless, some never saw the light of day because the means were lacking. The Khmers did not abandoned their indigenous deities, the masters of the land and its abundance, human heroes who became guardian spirits, and of course the protecting ancestors of each lineage. Evil spirits also roamed the land, bringing sickness or death. All these numerous and diverse divinities were worshipped, although obviously with less complex rituals than those of the Indian gods, and similarly their shrines would generally have been much simpler and built of perishable materials, as are those which house them nowadays. They were nevertheless of considerable importance in Khmer eyes and probably evoked much more dread than the Indian gods, who were naturally more remote, if only because of their ability to inflict immediate retribution when they were annoyed. These divinities were thus probably the subject of more regular ... Tags :Cambodia, Khmer, Angkor, Buddhism, Apsaras

| | Cambodia: HISTORY OF ANGKOR (5of6) [EN] Duration : 360 Seconds Buddhism was the other important religion. Its two principal forms are Mahayana ('Greater Vehicle') and Theravada (also known as Hinayana - 'Lesser Vehicle', a term not surprisingly considered derogatory by its followers). The Buddhism practised throughout Southeast Asia today is Theravada - 'the sayings of elders', following the pure precepts of the Buddha - but at the time of the Khmer Empire, official Buddhist worship was exclusively Mahayanist. Mahayana Buddhism seems to have played a more important role in what is now Thailand than in Cambodia - or at least, it was important over a longer period. At Angkor, it made its major appearance at the end of the 12th century with the accession of Jayavarman VII, but on the Khorat Plateau it was established much earlier. The temple of Phimai. In particular, was a centre of Buddhist worship. After the 7th century, Tantric thought began to infiltrate both Buddhism and Hinduism, and makes an important appearance it Phimai. Tantra is 'the doctrine and ritual of the left hand', in which the female force, or shakti, plays a dominant role in the universe. This esoteric belief involved many magical and mystical rituals, and female divinities played an increasing part. Vajrayana Buddhism was a development of Tantric thought, and had elaborate iconography. One of the characteristics of Mahayana Buddhism is the number of bodhisattvas. Literally Buddhas-to-be', these were beings who had voluntarily halted their progress on the path to ... Tags :Cambodia, Khmer, Angkor, Baphoun, Preah, Khan
| | Cambodia: HISTORY OF ANGKOR (6of6) [EN] Duration : 272 Seconds The inscriptions often mention the date, and sometimes the precise moment, at which a statue was 'brought to life' (the text speaks of 'opening a statue's eyes'), which was the crucial instant in the life of the temple. There was no solemn ceremony for the inauguration of a temple on its completion (which would have been difficult to determine exactly), nor one for laying the first stone. We know, however, that the Indian Shastras which laid down the rules of architecture, emphasised the extreme importance of the initial ceremonies for a building, and this is well attested by the presence of various 'foundation offerings' deposited beneath the actual foundations of the shrine, and also beneath the pedestals of the statues (which is why they have all been overturned by thieves), or even at the summit of the towers. The offerings were deposited in a square flagstone with various cavities, some of which were marked by letters and covered with a lid. In these cavities, precious stones, thin gold leaves, or even strands of hair or nail-clippings from the donor's body, were placed. "Art flourished in Kamboja as never before, centered around a capital city known to all Asia as Angkor, the Magnificent, a city of more than a million inhabitants - which when it was extricated from the jungle in modern times, contained not a single human being. Chinese and Indian envoys could hardly believe their eyes when they gazed at the splendid temple of Angkor Vat, a sublime work of art that ... Tags :Cambodia, Khmer, Angkor, Bayon, Ta, Prohm
