Cambodia "The Crimes of Comrade Duch"
Duration : 848 Seconds

Documentary for the Australian Audiences, David Scott and Ron Dean were two Australians, two of the millions who died in the killing fields of Cambodia, victims of the monster Comrade Duch. The Khmer Rouge killed nearly two million Cambodians from 1975 to 1979, spreading like a virus from the jungles until they controlled the entire country, only to systematically dismantle and destroy it in the name of a Communist agrarian ideal. Today, more than 30 years after Vietnamese soldiers removed the Khmer Rouge from power, the first genocide trials will start — a bittersweet note of progress in an impoverished nation still struggling to rehabilitate its crippled economic and human resources. The Khmer Rouge took root in Cambodia's northeastern jungles as early as the 1960s, a guerrilla group driven by communist ideals that nipped the periphery of government-controlled areas. The flash point came when Cambodia's leader, Prince Norodom Sihanouk, was deposed in a military coup in 1970 and leaned on the Khmer Rouge for support. The prince's imprimatur lent the movement legitimacy, although while he would nominally serve as head of state, he spent much of the Khmer Rouge's rule under house arrest. As the country descended into civil war, the Khmer Rouge presented themselves as a party for peace and succeeded in mobilizing support in the countryside. The pacifist talk belied a sinister agenda, one that would remain hidden to the outside world for years. When the Khmer Rouge succeeded ...

Show 152: Mobile phone banking & TV advertising revenue
Duration : 2465 Seconds

Banks offer financial security to their customers. However, in Cambodia most people are still reluctant to open bank accounts. Perhaps office hours and the physical locations of banks may prevent customers from taking full advantage of these services. Could mobile phone banking be a way to make financial transactions more convenient and accessible? Mobile phone banking (Main Story) Several companies are offering money transfer and bill payment services using your mobile phone. What could mobile phone banking mean for the majority of Cambodians who do not have a bank account? TV advertising revenue (Feature) In the world of TV, advertising revenue determines if a program sinks or swims. Cambodian TV channels are attracting large numbers of advertisers, but are they putting that revenue back into the production of quality programming? POLITICS AND SOCIETY: We look at the legislation concerning the institution of a new juvenile court system. TEASER In our poem this week, we poke fun at the extra service charge placed on motorists during road tax collection time.
