Bulgaria's involvement in World War II is a case in point. Bulgaria could have followed the example of Turkey by remaining neutral in WWII. There are reasons why Bulgaria followed a different path to Turkey. After the First World War the government of Kemal Ataturk implemented a rapid policy of westernisation in Turkey. Part of this involved Ataturk's decision to detach Turkeys future from its Ottoman past. Turkey would now become a republic with an interest in governing Turkish affairs rather than those of the Middle East or Asian subcontinent. Turkey's conscious departure from its past translated into a prosperous future. Bulgaria after WWI was plagued by political and economic instability. It was a poor country inhabited mostly by peasant smallholders. It was saddled with huge war reparations to Yugoslavia and Romania. The coups-d'etat and assassination attempts led the Bulgarian Tsar and his cohorts to conclude that democracy in Bulgaria does not work and that the only road to political and economic stability was that of Nazism. Bulgarian Nazism invoked old demons that haunted Bulgaria since the 19th century. The most important and remarkable thing when you visit Pleven is the Panorama hall. Nowadays there are 33 panoramas all over the world. One of them with the biggest dimensions is constructed in Pleven, about 170 km to the north-west of Sofia. Pleven is one of the largest Bulgarian towns with a millennium history and full of historical sights. Pleven became internationally famous with the five-month battles during the Russian-Turkish war 1877-78 (Русско-турецкая война 1877—1878) as a result of which Bulgaria was liberated from the 500 years of Ottoman yoke. The Pleven Epopee 1877 Panorama depicts these events combining painting, plastics and architecture in a whole artwork. It was painted by a team of 11 Russian and 2 Bulgarian artists. The Panorama was officially unveiled on 10 December 1977. Everything there is very realistic and where ever you stay, you feel as if you're in the center of the battlefield! It is a panegyric to the heroic deed of Russian and Rumanian soldiers who fought together for Bulgaria's freedom and a tribute to those who perished in the Pleven battlefields in the autumn of 1877. One of the most important battles of the Russian-Turkish war for freedom took place on August 11 1877 at the peak of Sveti Nikola (located in the central Balkan mountain). The joint force of Russian soldiers from the 36th Eagle infantry regiment and Bulgarian freedom fighters was attacked by a Turkish army of almost 27 000. Commander of the defending army, which numbered only 5 000 soldiers, was general Stoletov. The besieged troops at the peak fought bravely as the battle went on for tree days. The invading army, which received fresh reinforcements, was successfully repelled until the decisive moment in the end of the third day. Just as the discouraged defenders were about to give up, a numerous army lead by general Radetski arrived. In the bloody battle on what's now the Stoletov peak Northern Bulgaria was saved from being ravaged by Turkish troops but 3100 Russian soldiers and 535 Bulgarians were killed. A recreation of the battle was held 132 years later at the monument on Shipka peak which commemorates them.
