| | The Goldens WONDERS of the Bulgarian Archaeology - New Golden Mask of Thracian King Found Duration : 119 Seconds Golden mask and silver rhyton for wine were found today by Bulgarian archaeologis led by prof. Georgi Kitov. The findings are made at the Thracian mound close to the Sliven village of Topolchene, announced BNR. The findings are from a rich Thracian grave from IV century BC. It is supposed that the golden mask is of a Thracian king. For 150 years of archaeology in Bulgaria, this is the second time such a mask to be found in the country, informed Mr. Kitov. The mask is lighter and less carefully made that the one of Theres, found near Kazanluk. The archaeologists are yet to clear details about it. The rhyton represents a head of an animal, probably deer, and is around 30 cm high. Silver rython, silver cup and bronze vessels have also been found. The tomb is paneled with wood, there are remains of human skeleton, one bronze vessel and three preserved big earthen amphora. There is a stamp on their handle and after they are cleared it could be determined where they were made. Tags :new, history, glory, found, documentary, culture, civil, lost, museum

| | Bulgaria HiLites: Archaeological Reserve 'Yailata', Black Sea Coast Duration : 765 Seconds The national archaeological reserve 'Yailata' is situated 2 km away from Kamen Bryag in south and 18 km away from Kavarna in north-eastern Bulgaria. It is a seaside ledge covering 300 decares (45, 3 hectares) and is detached from the sea by 50-60 meters high rock massifs. There is a cave 'city' of 101 'apartments', settled as far back as V century BC Three necropolises (family tombs) out of III- IV century have been hollowed out in the rocks. Necropolis №1 has come onto being near a whittled down sanctuary, facing the rising sun. A little early- Byzantine stronghold is situated in the northern part of 'The Big Yaila'. It is built in the late V century. One tower- gate and four towers are partially preserved. There are also a sanctuary, sacrificial stones, and wineries, four dug into tombs, which have been reserved since the Antiquity. During the middle Ages, the caves have been used as a monastery complex. There are some proto- Bulgarian signs on their walls- runes, crosses and stone icons. The area of 'Yailata' is announced as an archaeological reserve in 1989 by a resolution of the Ministerial Council of Bulgaria. It covers comparatively big surface of the coast line starting from the village of Kamen Bryag in the north and reaching 'Rusalka' resort in the south, including 500 meters all along the sea line as well. | | Thracians - One Beautiful Mystery Duration : 389 Seconds My nickname is a thracian name, the song inte clip are national bulgarian rhodope snong.Thracian tombs can be found dating back to 3000 BC.By the 5th century BC, the Thracian presence was pervasive enough to have made Herodotus call them the second-most numerous people in the part of the world known by him (after the Indians),and potentially the most powerful. The Thracians in classical times were broken up into a large number of groups and tribes, though a number of powerful Thracian states were organized, such as the Odrysian kingdom of Thrace and the Dacian kingdom of Burebista. A type of soldier of this period called the Peltast probably originated in Thrace. The archaeological research of the Thracian culture started in the 20th century and especially after World War II, mainly on the territory of Southern Bulgaria. As a result of intensive excavation works in the 1960s and 1970s a number of Thracian tombs and sanctuaries were discovered. More significant among them are: the Tomb of Sveshtari, the Tomb of Kazanlak, Tatul, Seuthopolis, Perperikon, the Tomb of Aleksandrovo, Sarmizegetusa. On August 19, 2005, some Bulgarian archaeologists announced they had found the first Thracian capital, which was situated near Karlovo in Bulgaria. In November 2008, Archaeologists unearthed a well-preserved 1800-year-old lavishly ornamented four-wheel bronze chariot at an ancient Thracian tomb near the south-eastern village of Karanovo in Bulgaria. In Dabene, Bulgaria, a cache of more than ... | | The first Thracian mask of solid gold ever found Duration : 346 Seconds Teres, the masked king A team of Bulgarian archaeologists, led by Professor Georgi Kitov, discovered a 2400-year old golden mask in the tomb of an ancient Thracian king on August 19. The mask bears the image of a human face and is made of 500 grams of solid gold, Kitov said. The discovery was made near the town of Shipka, in the heart of the Stara Planina Mountain. Dozens of Thracian mounds are spread throughout this region, which archeologists have called "the Bulgarian valley of the kings", a reference to the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, which is home to the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs. "The unique mask looks even better than the famous image of King Agamemnon, the Greek anti-hero described by Homer in the Iliad," Kitov was quoted as saying by Bulgarian-language media. "This is the first Thracian mask of solid gold ever found," he said. Previously, archeologists had only found masks covered with golden foil. Initially, Kitov suggested that the mask could belong to King Seuthes III, the Thracian king who in the fifth century BCE ruled the territory that now is in today's Bulgaria. Later however, he and his team changed their view, and said the mask is most probably of King Teres I, father of the famous Thracian ruler Sitalkes, who expanded the Thracian kingdom into a huge empire, uniting for the first time all Thrace south of the river Danube. The tomb was covered with six stone slabs, each weighing at least two tons. The king's remains have not yet been found, but ... Tags :Bulgaria, Thrace, Gold, Mask, Teres, Kitov, Indiana, Jones
