When school teacher Nina T. set off on a group hike in the mountains, she expected a satisfying day, but a wrong turn led her to one of the most monumental experiences of a lifetime. Wikipedia Article: Dog spinning (Bulgarian: тричане на куче(та), trichane na kuche(ta)) is a ritual formerly practiced in a village in southeastern Bulgaria. In dog spinning, a dog is suspended above water on a rope. The dog is turned repeatedly in a given direction to wind the rope, then released so that it spins rapidly in the opposite direction as the rope unwinds. This ancient ritual of pagan origin was performed in order to prevent rabies. The first known reference to this practice in English is in a press release issued by the UK Green Party, issued on July 29, 2005. It includes a statement from Green Party MEP Dr Caroline Lucas, vice-president of the RSPCA and the European Parliament's cross-party Animal Welfare Intergroup. Dr Lucas criticised it as being cruel to dogs, saying "Dog-spinning is a barbaric practice and must not be allowed to continue into the 21st century." Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported the practice in March 2005. The "Sofia Echo" reported the practice in March 2011. It took place in the village of Brodilovo each year in March. The practice of the ritual was banned by the mayor of Tsarevo in 2006] after complaints by Bulgarian animal welfare organizations.[6]

Usually Bulgarian goats, sheep and cows are kept at home just throughout the night. The Bulgarian Sheppard picks them up on the way past your house in the morning, and drops them back of an evening. This service is charged at about one pound per month, per animal. This saves all the feed and mucking out. Новият вариант на „тричането" след намесата на защитници на животните и полиция This is the new, "softer" version of the pagan ritual called "trichane" (dog hanging) performed on dogs that aims at driving the evil spirits away. Its proponents had to adopt this version after last year's outcry at the barbaric nature of the ritual. This year animal rights activists and police as well as the numerous negative reactions abroad prevented the ritual from being performed in its original form. The village inhabitants reluctantly adopted the new version (ice bath) but said they would continue with the ritual as they believe it protects them from natural disasters. The villagers made it abundantly clear the changes were introduced not because they were concerned about the animals' safety and wellbeing but about their own in the face of extensive media scrutiny and police presence.

Bats Died in Bulgarian Cave over 'Expendables 2' Filming The Devetashka cave is considered to be one of the most important natural habitats of bats in Europe. The bats inside Bulgarian Devetashka cave, a key spot for spending the winter season, have come out of hibernation much earlier than usual and it is unclear how many will survive until spring. The conclusion was made by the Center for Bat Studies and Protection after a check of the cave. Experts, cited by the TV channel bTV, say that all colonies are active at times they must be in hibernation over the noise and being disturbed during the recent filming of Hollywood blockbuster "Expendables 2." Several dead bats have been found inside the cave and the cause is in the process of being established. The probe also revealed numerous tire marks, even in protected areas. The environmentalists conclude the filming had been in violation of the law since under current legislation the cave can be used only for tourism and scientific research. At the end of December, Nikolay Simov, a Bulgarian zoologist from the Center for Bat Studies and Protection at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, reported that the bat population in the Devetashka Cave has been reduced to 1/4, after the shooting of the movie. "The shooting harms the bat habitat - with the placement of props, the cutting down of vegetation, as well as disturbance by the presence of large numbers of people and the noise they make," said Simov, pointing out the special ...
