Brunei is a tiny sultanate established in 1984 on the coast between the Malaysia's Sabah and Sarawak provinces. And because of the incredible off shore oil riches Brunei is one of the riches countries in the world. The capital, Bunder Sere Bagowan, is located on the Brunei River It is a big overbuilt city for a small population of 75000. Most of the cities character remains in the 28 stiltied water villages called Kampung Ayer. There are some rather dull museums that can be visited about Malay culture, but there is a rather impressive mosque in the city center called Oman Ali Saifuddien. Nearby is the local KFC, the most popular fast food in this part of the world. The most interesting part of our trip was the international tug of war contest held on the parade grounds which was taken very seriously.
