The Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, for the second time organised a seminar on Management of Fish Rearing in Cages. The seminar is aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of fish breeding entrepreneurs. In this regard, the launching of the seminar was held this morning at the Orchid Garden Hotel in Berakas. Present was the Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Dayang Hajah Asmah binti Haji Saman. In her speech, she said the fisheries sector is one of the sectors to be continously developed by the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources to contribute towards diversification of the countrys economy. Dayang Hajah Asmah also said the Fisheries Department will also develop the countrys fish breeding industry and plans to expand the industry into offshore areas. At present, land-based fish breeding projects at the 40-hectare Sungai Paku Phase Two area for the Recirculation Aquaculture System project are being implemented and is expected to be completed by next year. These will be offered to interested entrepreneurs. Dayang Hajah Asmah added currently there are 58 fish breeding entrepreneurs in the country producing 60 metric tonnes of fish. The two-day seminar is an incentive of the Fisheries Department to give support and better understanding of the entrepreneurs in fish breeding technology.

The Temburong District is the biggest padi producer in Brunei Darussalam for the 2008/2009 main season, with an output of 405.89 metric tonnes from a 278.8 hectares of land area, involving 288 farmers or entrepreneurs. A Padi Laila Harvesting Ceremony was held at the Kampung Senukoh Agricultural Development Padi Project Farm in the Temburong District. Present at the ceremony was the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya. The Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources has been working towards implementing the strategy of increased rice production in the country by involving existing entrepreneurs in big-scale traditional management and commercial investment in rice production. This involves opening of areas on a major scale towards increasing the number of sites as required under the Short-term and long-term plans. The Yang Berhormat also visited the Selapon Agricultural Development area with the potential for padi plantation. The 80 hectare land area is to be further enlarged to up to 200 hectares; part of which will be used for production of Laila rice seedlings activity. The minister also visited the Kampong Meniup Coopertive Farm for local fruit plantation under the Rural Farmers' Development Programme.
