Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (NTN24) -- Rio de Janeiro's samba troupe rushes to finish floats and costumes honouring a famous Brazilian painter for the worldwide televised Carnival parades. With less than a week for the world's most famous Carnival bash, members of Rio de Janeiro's Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel samba troupe are working around the clock to finish floats and costumes that will honour Brazilian artist Candido Portinari. The samba groups field up to 5000 costumed dancers and musicians, including a 300-strong drum corps, who parade to songs which usually depict aspects of Brazilian and world history and culture. This year Mocidade will dance to the story of the world-famous Portinari, who dedicated most of his career to depict aspects of Brazil's rural and urban workers. Mocidade's creative director, Alexandre Louzada, said the samba school invested heavily in tiny details to make the floats more similar to Portinari's paintings. "We have used the same techniques that Portinari would have used, if he were alive, to show the public. So, we have hand-made sculptures that were painted with crayons, trying to make them similar to Portinari's paintings," he said.

Georgia O'Keeffe (1887 -- 1986) peintre américaine considérée comme l'une des peintres modernistes majeures du 20ème siècle. Au début de sa carrière elle peint surtout des aquarelles aux formes simples et aux couleurs vives et ses sujets de prédilection sont des paysages désertiques et des nus féminins stylisés. Son but sera de ne pas peindre ce qu'elle voit, mais ce qu'elle ressent. En 1917 Alfred Stieglitz, galériste et photographe qu'elle avait rencontré en 1905 à l'Art Students League de New-York organise une expostion personnelle d'elle. Ils se marieront en 1924. Elle sera sa Muse. Les photographies de son compagnon lui serviront souvent d'inspiration. Pour ses tableeaux de fleurs un autre photographe l'inspirera : Paul Strand Lequel est spécialisé dans la reproduction d'objets tellement rapprochés qu'ils se transforment en formes abstraites. Elle fera la même chose avec ses fleurs. « Je sais que je suis incapable de peindre une fleur, dit-elle, je ne sais pas non plus peindre le scintillement du soleil sur le sable un beau matin d'été, mais j'esprès pouvoir à travers la couleur transmettre mon exprérience de la fleur ou l'expérience que la fleur rend importante pour moi à un moment donné ».
