We board a boat on the harbour of lake Titicaca, which takes us out to the floating reed islands where we are shown a demonstration of how Islands are built by the native inhabitants. They dive into the lake and cut out the roots of the reeds, which then float to the surface like corks. The roots are then tied together to create a large floating mass and then covered by layers upon layers of reeds. The natives then build huts and living spaces from the reeds. The bases of the reeds stems can also be eaten and are a good source of iron...

We ride the train from La Pas Alto to the lakeside port of Guaqui in Bolivia on the edge of Lake Titicaca. Here we meet the twice weekly train ferry from Puno carrying grain. The journey is across barren and sparely populated land up on the Altiplano. At 12600 feet above sea level, the inlet of Lake Titicaca is magnificent with wildlife and reed beds. Sadly, the ferry from Puno no longer operates as traffic is sent by road directly to La Paz, so this line is now without a service. Part of a longer trip in Chile and Bolivia organised by Ffestiniog Travel in November 1997.
