Every weekend in Copacabana, lucky locals bring their new cars to church for a baptism. After they've dressed the car up in flowers and doused it in champagne, the priest comes around and blesses it (for a small donation, of course). Salar de Uyuni it is located in the Potosí and Oruro departments in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes, 3650 meters high. The major minerals found in the salar are halite and gypsum. Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia, seat of the Supreme Court (Corte Suprema de Justicia), and capital of the Chuquisaca department. Located in the south-central part of the country, Sucre lies at an altitude of 2800m (9200ft). Historically the city has also been known as Charcas, La Plata and Chuquisaca. The department of Potosí is in southwestern Bolivia. It comprises 118218 km² with 709013 inhabitants (2001 census). The capital is the city of Potosí. It is mostly a barren, mountainous region with one large plateau to the west, where the largest salt flat in the world - Salar de Uyuni - is located. Potosí was the richest province in the Spanish empire, providing a great percentage of the silver that was shipped to Europe. This past summer Missouri University of Science and Technology's chapter of Engineers Without Borders traveled to two destinations in Bolivia to apply their engineering skills to local problems. The first destination was a small boarding school in the Amazon. There the problem consisted of finding a clean source of water. The second location was in Inca Katurapi, a small village in the Andes where there had never been latrines. UMR students and faculty developed composting latrines for the community in an attempt to help reduce the infant mortality rate. What follows is the story of that adventure. Tom Shipley: Videographer
