Biography Carlos Espinoza Bernal is a modern artist devoting himself to spray painting since he was a teenager. He was born in 1975 in Santiago, Chile, South America. This prodigy child learnt the art of spray painting on the street. His works mainly include canvas and paper paintings. In 13 years of doing his art he has also painted the murals of many hotels, restaurants and houses, thus leaving his „handprints in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia. He has also painted in Morroco. In 2005 he came to Europe, looking for a fresh challenge and new possibilities of evolution. He has demonstrated the power of spray painting in Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany. Now he is living and working in Slovenia where he paints at home, in shopping centres, at fairs and anywhere where there is „some art going on. SHAKESPEAR: And now we travel to the South American country of Bolivia. There stands the 'Andean Sistine Chapel,' a colorful fusion of Renaissance and Baroque painting. Lets take a look at this well-preserved house of worship. STORY: The church at Curahuara de Carangas, Bolivia is a long way from the grandeur of the Vatican. It sits on the lonely plateau close to Chile's border, 120 miles south of La Paz. It's a place where llamas graze, where the air is cold, arid and thin. That cool, dry air has kept murals inside the 400-year-old church in nearly mint condition. This 'Andean Sistine Chapel' is a colorful fusion of Renaissance and Baroque painting, mixing indigenous beliefs and sensibilities to create a style known as 'mestizo baroque.' Father Gabriel Antequera: [Father Gabriel Antequera, Andrean Sistine Chapel]: "The good condition of the paintings is because of the geographic location of the church. It's a cold place. There's no humidity and very little natural light gets in. You can see that in this section next to the door, the color is losing intensity compared to what is in the baptismal room where not much light gets in." Among the churches' treasures are intricately stitched priests' robes once used for saying mass in Latin. Although the mastery of Michelangelo's brush is missing, the murals, painted by four artists from Peru, tell a different story than those of the Sistine Chapel. in 2005, I did an art experiment while living in La Paz (3900 mt alt) in Bolivia with Huamacha (cactus known as San Pedro) which is a powerful mescaline drug, used by shamans South America (Andes and deserts of North West Peru). I wanted to see how and ans what I would scetch and see if I would be able to control my colouring and lines. I was on a journey that began at 8 pm and tiended by 9 am (that is the scetching), I coninued my San pedro journey in the streets of la Pz until 12 pm. I kept the scetches which were made with pastel crayons, and painted them over (or say filled in the colours), finished them a day after I had taken Ayahuasca Quillabamab, Peru in 2006. The vivid imagery made me see the images differently, ans so you get paintings whish are painted the way I saw them in Ayahuasca colouring and lines. Ayahuasca is a vine from the jungle. Both plants are used by shamans and recently also abused by tourists and phoney shamans, Cuzco being the hot spot for exploitation of the sacred plants, better known as Mother or Father plants. Recently I have been barred from exhibiting these pictures in a gallery by a French company that curates exhibitions for painters for a gallery in Spain, on the mere basis that they promote drugs. Art is not in hands of art connoisseurs anymore, but businessmen. I knew that, but this beats it all!
