| | LOS ANGELES INCAS - PART 1 of 2 (MUSIC OF BOLIVIA, PERU & MEXICO ON SANTA MONICA PROMENADE) 4-18-99 Duration : 903 Seconds LOS ANGELES INCAS - PART 1 of 2 (MUSIC OF BOLIVIA, PERU & MEXICO ON SANTA MONICA PROMENADE) 4-18-99 ALBUM: GOZANDO & ALTURAS AWESOME SOUTH AMERICAN MUSIC !!! Strings Charango The 'charango' is a tiny 10-stringed guitar made of an armadillo shell. It produces a sweet, happy, high-pitched sound and is perhaps the instrument which best symbolizes the blending of the two very different cultures - the Spanish and the Inca. The guitar was introduced to the Americas by the Spanish and the use of armadillo shells for the body of the instrument is uniquely native American. It is believed that the soul of the animal is kept alive by playing music and, in some charangos, the coarse hairs sparsely covering the shell continue to grow long after the instrument is made. The charango has an even tinier cousin named 'waylacho' (why-law-cho) and it produces a very high pitch. On the other hand, its brothers 'ronroco' and 'rocongo' are both large and lower sounding instruments but are crafted in the same manner as the charango. Only recently have wooden models of the charango family become common due to the decline in the armadillo population. Spanish Guitar The Spanish 'guitar' is made of wood and has six strings. It is found in virtually all parts of Latin America and is the most widely played instrument as well. Woodwinds Zampoña The 'zampoña' is known in other parts of the world as 'pan pipe'. It is a series of bamboo reeds, each tuned to a specific note, and tied together. Zampoñas are ... | | INKHAY - Andean music from Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador-Rutgers University NJ 1993 Duration : 450 Seconds Performance celebrating the Hispanic Heritage . The musicians play over two dozen musical instruments. Among the wind instruments, they play a variety of pan-pipes known to the natives as "sikus", "antaras" or "zamponas". They also play end-notched vertical flutes called kenas, transverse flutes, whistles and ocarinas as well as an array of percussion instruments. All these instruments have their roots in pre-Hispanic civilization. INKHAY's music, primarily, represents elements of South American indigenous culture when they perform wind and percussion music. They also include European musical elements when they play stringed instruments like the guitar, mandolin and the well known "charango" (a guitar like instrument fashioned of an armadillo shell). Over the past three centuries, harp music, together with other stringed instruments have become an integral part of the " mestizo" traditional music of the Andes. The task of group INKHAY is to interpret the different styles of playing Andean music maintaining the styles of the native communities. Members of the group in 1993: Pepe Santana, Rothman Teran, Oscar Brito, Mario Rodriguez, Paco Moreno Tags :Inkhay, Andean Music, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Tradition, Native music, Cotacachi, Saraguro, Otravalo, Pepe Santana, Rothman Teran, New York, Siku, sampoña, guitarra, quena, bombo, huancara, Sanjuanito, Ruben Teran, Indigenous, Andes Mountains, inti-raymi, Mario Rodriguez, Oscar Brito, Paco Moreno, workshop, Andean festivals, folk
