Politics and the People: The State of Coca and Cocaine in Bolivia (Part 1)
Duration : 549 Seconds

www.thepoliticsandthepeople.com In trying to reconcile ancient heritage and international regulations, Bolivian cocaleros (coca growers), with the guidance of President Evo Morales, are taking novel approaches to coca growing and distribution. The Politics And The People The State of Coca and Cocaine, a documentary by Michael Wilde and Valerie Schenkman, is divided into four parts: an overview of the past history of coca regulation told from a cocalero's perspective; rationalization, or self-regulated of coca farming; alternative development, international participation in introducing crops to substitute coca growers' income; and industrialization, the Bolivian government's attempt to introduce coca to an international market. Issues regarding human rights and self-regulation pervade The Politics and the People's look at drug control and tradition within an impoverished society.

World Water Day 2012: Bolivia's melting glaciers
Duration : 213 Seconds

This World Water Day, 22 March 2012, we look at Bolivia's glaciers, which are melting at an alarming rate. Farming communities on the slopes beneath the Illimani glacier in La Paz have land to farm, but not enough water to grow the crops they need to feed and sustain their families. Organisations like Christian Aid partner Agua Sustentable are measuring impacts and piloting schemes like reservoirs, to maximise water usage in these communities. Climate change is a global issue. We all need to take action. Read more: www.christianaid.org.uk Climate campaign: www.christianaid.org.uk Christian Aid in Bolivia: www.christianaid.org.uk

Riz Khan - Evo Morales vs US - 24 July Part 1
Duration : 766 Seconds

Ever since he won the Bolivian presidency in 2005, Evo Morales has been a thorn in America's side. He once said, "The worst enemy of humanity is US capitalism." Originally a coca farmer himself, he has tried to block US intervention in eradicating coca farming in his country. In 2006, he partially nationalized Bolivia's oil and gas industry. Last month both countries recalled their ambassadors and tensions remain high between La Paz and Washington.

Adapting to climate change in Bolivia
Duration : 158 Seconds

For communities living in the heart of the Bolivian Amazon, the devastating effects of a changing climate have inspired them to work more closely than ever before. Using an ancient farming system last used in the area 3000 years ago, they are protecting their crops from worsening floods in the rainy season, as well as more severe droughts in the dry season. But to make a global difference we need world leaders to agree a climate fund to support communities across the world to avoid the worst effects of climate change. TIWANAKU : BOLIVIA FINDS IT´S HISTORY
Duration : 169 Seconds

On the way of La Paz to the Titicacasee are the ruins of Tiwanaku. But despite spectacular finds the archaeologists are still dependent on assumptions, remain these 3000 years old culture still in the dark. Estimations assume that that in Tiwanaku approx. 50-Tausend humans lived, in the whole region approx. 500-Tausend - an enormous number. But when this realm developed, how was it organized, when and why it went down? - many questions arise, the archaeologists try to answer. They go partial unusual ways. With field experiments in Indio villages was eg tried to determine the agricultural methods Tiwanakus. Had preceded excavations and aerial photos in the region around the Titicacasee, which referred to a highly developed water cult. Already after few harvests one knows today that only the highly developed agriculture Tiwanakus formed the basis for the propagation of the later large and cultures, also those the Inkas. Sufficient quantities of food could be manufactured and stored without problems. This concerned above all the potato, basic food of the Indios. Today one knows that compared with the normal harvests up to twenty-way quantities can be harvested according to the Tiwanaku method - for the Bolivian agriculture this of enormous importance will be. Archaeologist teams instruct already in several villages around the Titicacasee the Indio farmers in the 3000 years old techniques. In September 1991 a American-Bolivian team on behalf of the Getty donation under the ...

Climatologists Predict Catastrophic Drought for Bolivia
Duration : 269 Seconds

According to a new study by climatologists, Bolivia will be overwhelmed by a catastrophic drought within fifty years. They say Lake Titicaca which sustains the capital La Paz, is drying up at an alarming pace putting millions of lives at risk. Bolivia's plight will be at at the forefront of discussions at next week's climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico. For thousands of year, the waters of lake Titicaca, South America's largest lake, have sustained and nurtured millions of people. Today, however, the water is running out. Scientists say climate change has come to the lake with a particular severity. The latest study, conducted by a team led by the Florida Institute of Technology's Mark Bush, paints a bleak picture. [Mark Bush, Climatologist, Florida Institute of Technology]: "When this lake basically goes away suddenly the area there becomes a desert. And so this could happen, we think, within the next 50 years." The team investigated a 370000-year record of climate and vegetation change in Andean ecosystems. The study began in 2001 when scientists drilled into the deepest parts of the lake to retrieve fossilized pollen trapped in the sediments. Bush found that during two of the last three interglacial periods, Lake Titicaca shrank by as much as 85 percent. Adjacent grasslands were replaced by desert. The results of the study point to similar scenario. Farmer Luis Quispe Mamani say it has already started. His family has been farming the land on the shores of Lake ...

In Focus: Bolivia's Coca Culture
Duration : 471 Seconds

Learn more: pulitzercenter.org The coca plant, used in indigenous cultural rituals and traditional medicines, is also the main ingredient for cocaine. Bolivia is the third largest producer of coca and cocaine after Peru and Colombia. Despite pressure to cut back on coca farming, many Bolivians see few alternatives. Evo Morales' controversial "Coca Yes, Cocaine No" program focuses on the industrialization of coca for products like tea, medicine and toothpaste, much of it with financial help from Morales' regional ally, Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez. According to Bolivia's Coca Industrialization Directorate, there are an estimated 50000 coca growers in Los Yungas, who already support the effort to market coca legally. This project is part of Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Coca Si, Cocaina No: Evo Morales' Coca Policy in Los Yungas, Bolivia" (bit.ly Featured on Foreign Exchange with Daljit Dhaliwal the week of September 19, 2008.
