On Jan 6 (12 days after Christmas) the Epiphany (Los Reyes Magos, or 3-Wise Men/Kings) is celebrated. A parade makes its way from church to church in Sucre, finally ending up at the San Francisco church (est 1538, current structure completed 1581). This clip shows the 1st half of the procession -- the 1st group of dancers can't quite get their act together and you can see/hear 2 or more 'coaches' (formal or self-appointed) trying to get them in line or hurry up. You then see a grey-frocked Franciscan friar being interviewed for a radio program. Amongst other things he names the 3 Kings as "G/Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar". I terminated the clip for fear of filling up the chip or draining the battery, but near the end in the distance you can see the 1st of 2 or three cars each with 3 King actors throwing candies and other treats at the crowd. Wonderful uninhibited and slightly wild and catchy music. Recorded on a Canon SX20 in HD mode. Depending on your connection speed and hardware it may appear jerky in HD but if your hardware is up to scratch should play smoothly after fully loading.

Bolivia (2009) 104 min. Directed by Toshifumi Matsushita On Bolivia's inland salt sea (the Salar de Uyuni), 13-year-old Kunturi and his family cut bricks of salt by hand, which they use to barter for goods. The Quecha people have lived and worked close to the land for centuries (the term Pachamama means Mother Earth). It's not an easy life, but still rich with friends and family. When Kunturi's grandmother falls ill, his father decides to take his son on the almost four-month journey along the salt trail (the Ruta de la Sal). Their first stop is the Potosi mine to find a friend's long-absent father. As tragedy and joy commingle, Kunturi is forced to confront the complexities of adult life, including death, suffering and, most sweetly and powerfully of all, first love, Director Toshifumi Matsushita's fresh approach to the coming-of-age story is helped immeasurably by actors whose open faces and fundamental honesty can't help but shine forth. As father and son, and their huge herd of llamas, make their slow way into the mountains, the accumulation of many small details adds up into something altogether absorbing. A bit of bartered honeycomb, grief spun into song, dreams and nightmares--all are beautifully caught and the cumulative effect is powerful. There is deep warmth to Pachamama, a quality that insinuates itself gently, and with almost no self-consciousness. In this talk, Marisol de la Cadena argues that current indigenous movements propose an ontological pluralization of politics as they conjure other-than-human beings (mountains, water, and soil--ie what we call nature) into the public political arena. Epistemically, she argues, this process cancels the nature-culture divide central to modern forms of representation, and exceeds notions of political plurality conceived as the inclusion of human marked by gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, religious believe-- or any other diacritic of human difference.
