On the way of La Paz to the Titicacasee are the ruins of Tiwanaku. Today, August 6, is the Independence Day of Bolivia, honoring its autonomy declared in 1825. Situated in central South America, southwest of Brazil, Bolivia was once the center of the ancient Tiwanaku Empire, which was very influential from 400 to 500. The Spiritual and Political Center of the Tiwanaku Culture in the western part of the country is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site. Showing global leadership on the environment, Bolivia hosted the World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth. His Excellency Juan Evo Morales Ayma, the nation's first indigenous person to be elected president, convened the summit. August 6 is also the Independence Day of the Caribbean nation of Jamaica, observing its self-rule achieved in 1962. Jamaica is well-known for its wide variety of ecosystems such as rainforests, savannas, elfin forests at high elevations, and arid sandy regions. Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park in eastern Jamaica has among the highest amount of endemic and total species diversity in the Caribbean. Under his rule, indigenous groups have gained more rights, poverty has been reduced and a new constitution has been drafted. But Morales, a former coca farmer, or cocalero, has also enacted policies that many argue have negatively impacted indigenous communities.
