Police raid homes to stub out smoking habit (Reuters) -- Bhutan police can raid homes of smokers in a search for contraband tobacco and are training a special tobacco sniffer dog in a crackdown to honor a promise to become the world's first smoke-free nation. Buddhist Bhutan, where smoking is considered bad for one's karma, banned the sale of tobacco in 2005, but with a thriving tobacco smuggling operation from neighboring India, the ban failed to make much of an impact. But legislation passed in the new year, granting police powers to enter homes, is set to stub out the habit, threatening five years in jail for shopkeepers selling tobacco and smokers who fail to provide customs receipts for imported cigarettes.

The Indian Army served both in India and, particularly during the World Wars, in foreign regions. Further, in India, it was constituted for the defence of the regions of direct British governance (the Provinces of India, or, collectively, British India) as well as of those under British suzerainty (the Princely States). In World War I the Indian Army saw extensive service including: Western Front Battle of Gallipoli Sinai and Palestine Campaign Mesopotamian Campaign, Siege of Kut East Africa, including the Battle of Tanga About 43000 Indian soldiers were killed and 65000 wounded during World War I. Also serving in World War I were so-called "Imperial Service Troops", provided by the semi-autonomous Princely States. About 21000 were raised in World War I, mainly consisting of Sikhs of Punjab and Rajputs from Rajputana (such as the Bikaner Camel Corps and Jodhpur Lances). These forces played a prominent role in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign.

As war looms between Sudan and South Sudan, Christians of southern origin living in Sudan fear retribution from its Islamic government. As of April 8, at least half a million ethnic southerners (the majority of whom are Christian) living in Sudan are now considered foreigners if they have not registered for citizenship. Officials in Khartoum, Sudan's capital, gave southerners another 30 days to register or leave the country. Most of those affected were refugees that fled north during the long civil war between the mostly Islamic north and the largely Christian south. The war, which ran from 1983 until the signing of a peace deal in 2005, killed nearly 2 million people. A Monk who pursued Buddhist studies in Sri Lanka holds the high office of the Vihare. It is also a vihare which attracts tourists from other countries. The President and his delegation visited a monument put up on behalf of war heroes who sacrificed their lives during the battle against the Assam guerillas.
