First of all, today I am wearing a yellow and white striped shirt. Secondly, on this presentation of Project Bhutan I talk about the Government and Politics of the Kingdom of Bhutan. I describe the old government settings in Bhutan for then analizing the Modernization of Bhutan started by His Majesty King Jigme Singye Wangchuck. During the '90s the process of modernization meant the transfer of power from the monarch to the National Assembly and to the different Ministries. The figure of the Prime Minister starts having importance, and finally we can see that Bhutan goes from an absolut monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. This is something that takes place at the beginning of the '00s, when on the year 2001 a draft of the Constitution is created. The actual Constitution of Bhutan was presented to the people in 2005, and 2 years later it entered into force. During 2007-2008 the first parlamentary elections are held in the Kingdom. It is also important to have in mind that the process of modernization also carried the change of the monarch, on the year 2008 King Jigme Singye Wangchuck is going to let the throne of the Kingdom to his son, who is the actual monarch of Bhutan, King Jigme Khesar Wangchuck. On the video I also explain the Parlamentary Configuration that Bhutan has, the Upper and Lower Houses and also the actual number of seats that the different political parties have. Bhutan is a unique example of a constitutional monarchy that harmoniously blends together its cultural heritage, spiritual moorings and practices, political ideology and its economic ambitions. The film visually evokes modern Bhutan, tucked away in the Himalayas and surrounded by huge nations like India and China, in all its various forms. The films also refers to its rich, cultural and religious history. Bhutan is a unique story, as the film demonstrates, of a nation building its own democracy in compliance with its particular character and history.

Tshering Tobgay was a Bhutanese civil servant who worked to advance vocational training. He was the first civil servant to resign to take up active politics (he did so in Feb 2007). At that time His Majesty the King repeatedly called for people to take up politics and form political parties to prepare for the introduction of democracy. Now Tshering is a Member of Parliament representing Sombaykha Constitutency in Haa. He is the Leader of the possibly the world's smallest Opposition Party in the National Assembly of Bhutan. Tshering is 46 years old, married with 2 children, enjoys the outdoors, trekking, running and biking. He discusses what Gross National Happiness, and what makes him happy, as any red blooded Bhutanese would. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. A special meeting between the King of Bhutan and the SAARC Heads of State will be held this afternoon. All Heads of State who participate in the SAARC Summit are expected to attend the meeting. A special flag in Bhutan that symbolizes victory over enemy forces will also be hoisted. According to the Presidential Media Unit saplings will be planted and an exhibition depicting the creations of people from the SAARC countries will be inaugurated to mark the 16th SAARC Summit.
