Bhutanese Song: Sergi Dhuenhi
Duration : 303 Seconds

23rd September, 2010 is Blessed Rainy Day, which is the significant day in Bhutan. On this day all natural water resources in the country are considered to be sanctifying and citizens are encouraged to take an outdoor bath to be cleansed of "bad deeds, obstructions and defilements" and accumulated bad karma. Families traditionally gather for a meal of thup (porridge) at breakfast time. The holiday also marks the end of the farming season and the beginning of the harvest season. The most auspicious hour for the ablution is determined by astrologers. The best time starts at 7:30AM TST where we have to wash facing north, sources said. They refer to the Bhutanese lunar calendar (essentially the Tibetan lunar calendar), but the exact method of their calculations have will not be disclosed. Meet the Entrepreneur: Lotus Foods at the Clinton Global Initiative
Duration : 142 Seconds

Established in 1995, Lotus Foods is a specialty rice company that sells heirloom rice from China, Bhutan, Indonesia, Cambodia and Madagascar. Part of Lotus Foods' mission is to provide sustainable livelihoods to smallholder farmers—the company purchases rice according to fair trade pricing standards, generally around 20-30% above farm gate prices. Today, the company imports specialty rice from Argentina, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Madagascar, and the US The company is at the forefront of natural food trends and farming techniques, especially those that help farmers. In the mid 1990s, Lotus Foods worked closely with its suppliers to transition them from conventional to organic farming. Eighty percent of its suppliers now have organic certifications and 40% have fair trade certifications. Since 2005, Lotus Foods has been working with the Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD) to jointly promote the System Rice Intensification (SRI) method. In 2009, the company successfully launched its SRI-One Seed Revolution line with rice from Cambodia, Indonesia and Madagascar. Developed in the early 1980s, SRI transforms the management of plants, focusing on the development of the roots, so that less input can produce more output. This transformation helps famers to improve their productivity, income and living standard, while yielding nutritious rice that benefits the environment.

Fertile Ground in Assam - 2011.wmv
Duration : 381 Seconds

This year, Fertile Ground's group of volunteers participated in a wide range of activities during their stay in Assam, India. While our organization's primary goal is to promote eco-friendly agricultural practices, we're also keenly interested in providing opportunities for people to learn about and celebrate the diversity and richness of our various cultures. In the remote northeast corner of the state, we created a new demonstration garden where people are learning to produce compost, grow green manure crops and create permanent raised beds. These practices will help villagers living in and around Ambikapur village improve sandy soil conditions and make good use of locally available materials. With the support of Rotary Clubs in District 5020, World Community Development Education Society, individual donors and a group of enthusiastic volunteers, we were able to provide school supplies and construct latrines, swing sets and teeter totters. In Jorhat district, we connected with our partner organization, Prakriti-Save Nature, whose members are teaching school children, families, farmers and tea growers how to produce compost, vermicompost and compost "teas." And we spent time with a number of tea growers and farming families in Bodoland. Fertile Ground is looking for knowledgeable and enthusiastic organic growers interested in spending 6 to 8 weeks in the state of Assam in northeast India. Volunteers would work with our partners in several parts of the state, connecting ...

Paddy or rice cultivation in north-east India
Duration : 48 Seconds

Paddy or rice cultivation along the Assam-Arunachal border in north-east India. Also, women beating cereal husk with sticks to separate the grain. Cows pull the hull prior to cultivating the rice fields and Assamese women perform the Bihu or harvest dance. Arunachal Pradesh is a state of India, located in the far northeast. It borders the states of Assam and Nagaland to the south, and shares international borders with Burma in the east, Bhutan in the west, and Tibet (now occupied by the People's Republic of China) in the north. Some of the territory is claimed by the People's Republic of China as part of South Tibet, although it is an integral part of India now. The northern border of Arunachal Pradesh reflects the McMahon Line, a controversial 1914 treaty between the United Kingdom and a Tibetan government, which was never accepted by the Chinese government, and not enforced by the Indian government until 1950. Itanagar is the capital of the state. Arunachal Pradesh means "land of the dawn lit mountains" in Sanskrit. It is also known as "land of the rising sun" Thisfootage is part of the professionally-shot broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of imagery from South Asia.
