Belize is the smallest country in the whole of the Americas with a population of just over 300000, but since becoming a major transit point for cocaine trafficked from Colombia to the US in the late 1980s, its developed a serious gang problem and become one of the most dangerous places on the planet. Until recently, guns and cocaine were practically unheard of in Belize. Today the country is facing a massive crack cocaine problem, there are hundreds of semi-automatic weapons in the hands of gangs and the country has a per capita murder rate 5 times higher than the US, 98% of it gang-related. Ross meets reformed gangsters who introduce him to the dangerous streets of Belize City and the gangs that control them. Ross gets to see a fraction of the weapons that make this city so violent, including grenades and high explosives, the new weapon of choice for the dozens of gangs which control Belize City.

Learn more: pulitzercenter.org For the last four months, Pulitzer Center grantee Nick Miroff has been reporting on the spillover of the drug war from Mexico to Central America. The Mexican cartels looked to Central America as a place to expand their trade and create smuggling routes. Miroff traveled to Belize, Honduras and Costa Rica to see how people were coping with the increase in violence and drugs and many people he talked with agreed the United States should expand its response and presence in the struggling countries. This report is part of Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Fragile States: The Drug War in Central America" (bit.ly ) by Nick Miroff.

The 19th of November every year marks Garifuna Settlement Day in Belize. The Garifuna people first arrived in Belize in 1832. Dinah and I stayed in Hopkins to see the reenactment of the landing of the Garifuna people in Belize. Each year in Belize on Garifuna Settlement Day, locals in Hopkins reenact 'The Landing' by slipping out to sea in boats, then riding into shore, waving palm fronds and banana leaves to symbolize the cassava that sustained their ancestors. The Garifuna come from a people that were on slave ships that were shipwrecked off St Vincent. Their intermarriage with the Caribs from St Vincent formed the Garifuna people. The Garifuna adopted the Carib language but kept their African musical and religious traditions. In 1795 the Garifuna people rebelled against the British and relocated to Roatan in Honduras. In 1832, many Garifuna left Honduras after a civil war there and settled in Dangriga, Belize on November 19th. Garifuna Settlement Day began to be celebrated in Dangriga in 1941.
