The Carroll County Arkansas Vets without Borders will return to Hopkins, Belize in February of 2011 to assist the Hopkins Humane Society in their effort to provide free health clinics for the pets of Hopkins. Dr. Periott and Ms Catherine lead a rehearsal of the estimable Belize Choral Society. This group can really sing, and read difficult choral music. There are trips and performances, and competitions involved. They all pay their own way on the trips. All four parts present & grouped sitting together. I understand this director teaches music at a college level and plays 50 different instruments well. This doesn't surprise me. This classroom is clean & beautifully equipped with the largest possible surface of white board, ample pens, an overhead projector & easy to understand presentation port. Nice classroom with a new soundproof, folding wall that divides the room into 2, and the energy saving feature of having 2 switches for lights for that room. This choir practices in any room the high school gives them, and the pianist is using an electric piano. I understand our Los Alamos group sent an electric piano of this sort to the elementary school or church on the Burrell Boom Methodist school premises for music making. That is awesome.

Snorkeling "Canyons" the reef just adjacent to the Oceanic Society research station on Blackbird Caye in Belize we saw this wonderful spotted eagle ray swim right below us. This was just a few days after Sylvia Earle had been out at Blackbird (Turneffe Atoll) talking about her new project, drawing attention to "Hope Spots" for the oceans of the world. Blackbird Caye is part of Turneffe Atoll, located about 27 miles East of Belize City and about 9 miles West of the "Blue Hole." Oceanic Society has natural history programs, as well as a variety of participatory research projects on offer throughout the year. As Sylvia pointed out in one of her nightly lectures, the waters around Turneffe still are home to a great diversity of marinelife, with this eagle ray being a graceful example, hopefully the government will soon be motivated to finalize official protection status for this atoll ecosystem.

Red-footed Booby colony filmed on Half Moon Caye Natural Monument. Half Moon Caye is located in the Lighthouse Reef atoll located 50 miles off the coast of Belize. This colony is primarily of the white morph of the species and is a mixed colony with another species, the Magnificent Frigatebird. Half Moon Caye Natural Monument is managed by the Belize Audubon Society. It is a brief stop on many of the diving and snorkel tours to the Blue Hole Natural Monument which is located in the same atoll, 7.5 miles to the north. Camping is allowed on the caye and on this trip we spent two nights there.
