| 92 Belizean Names Duration : 203 Seconds My cousins and I got bored and took 3 days to make this video (planning, shooting/reshooting and quick editing). We thought it would be funny to make a video of common Belizean names and sayings. (We are in Fact Belizean) This video is all in good fun. For those wondering what language we're speaking in, it's Creole/Kreole. Creole is basically a Caribbean style/type of broken English. Oh! The song in the background is WILD GILERT by Lovindeer. :) Thanks Andrew, Steph & Trav Tags :Belize, Belizean, Names, Sayings, Obama, Hurricane, Isha, One, Road, Pickney, Wild, Gilert, Rice, and, Beans, Tamales, United, States, Dead, Batty, Marcelina, Shyne, Houston, Like, That, Justin, Beiber, Rihanna, Kesha, Ke$ha, Shane, Dawson, Funny, Black, People, Kanye, West

| | Language, Dance and Music of the Garifuna Duration : 171 Seconds UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: A population of mixed origin incorporating cultural elements of indigenous Caribbean and African groups, the Garifuna settled along the Atlantic coast of Central America after being forced to flee from the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent in the eighteenth century. Today, Garifuna communities mainly live in Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Belize. The Garifuna language belongs to the Arawakan group of languages and has survived centuries of discrimination and linguistic domination. It is rich in tales (úraga) originally recited during wakes or large gatherings. The melodies bring together African and Amerindian elements, and the texts are a veritable repository of the history and traditional knowledge of the Garifuna, such as cassava-growing, fishing, canoe-building and the construction of baked mud houses. There is also a considerable amount of satire in these songs, which are accompanied by various drums and dances, which the spectators may join in. These traditions are still very important to the life and survival of the Garifuna people. The elders are the ones who maintain many of the ceremonies, festivals and oral traditions. However, economic migration, discrimination and the complete absence of the Garifuna language from the school system are endangering its survival. Although the language is still widely spoken, it is now taught in only one village ... Tags :Intangible, Cultural, Heritage;, UNESCO, 2003, Convention;, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua;, 00008

| | BELIZEAN BLOODSHED Duration : 104 Seconds HAPPY INDEPENDENCE BELIZE!! To Commence 27 years of Belize Independence, I decided to upload an anti-violence poem which I wrote to start the September Celebrations. This is a Spoken Word Piece which is featured in my second book, ARTIST CONFESSIONS AMAZON - www.amazon.com TWITTER - www.twitter.com FACEBOOK - wwwfacebook.com A short history on Belize -- Belize has been an independent nation since September 21st 1981. Formerly British Honduras, Belize has a rich history starting with the great Maya civilization through pirates, buccaneers and slavery, to modern day Independence and democracy. Belize is a country of various cultures, languages, and ethnic groups. Approximately 270000 people in Belize consist of Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, Spanish, Maya, English, Mennonite, Lebanese, Chinese, and East Indian. Due to racial harmony and religious tolerance, all of these different elements have mixed and blended successfully, and Belize has gained a widespread reputation for its friendly peoples. One of the most prominent ethnic groups are the Creoles, which formed 30% of the population in 2001. Creoles are descendants of the intermingling of the early British settlers with African slaves. More than 40% of the population is Mestizo. They are descendants of mixed blood Mexicans and Yucatec Mayans who fled from the Yucatan in the mid 1800's. Another 6.6% of Belize's population are the Garifuna. The Garifuna have their own language and culture. The Yucatec, Mopan, and Kekchi are ... Their language belonged to the Totonac-Mayan family. From AD 325 to 925 (Classical Period) the Maya culture dominated the region, after which it declined under pressure from the Toltec and, from the 16th century, the Spanish. The Maya are known for their ceremonial centres, which included stepped pyramids, ball courts, and astronomical observatories. Today Maya live in Yucatán, Guatemala, Belize, and western Honduras, and number 89 million (1994 est). Many speak Maya along with Spanish, but they are now Roman Catholic. The Maya were originally ruled by a theocracy supported by taxation and tribute; they traded with their neighbours to the north and south. Maya beliefs were based on land, which was held in common until the arrival of the Spanish. They celebrated a complex religion with a calendar, many deities, and ceremonies that included a kind of ball game and human sacrifice. They constructed stone buildings and stepped pyramids without metal tools; used hieroglyphic writing in manuscripts, of which only three survive; were skilled potters, weavers, and farmers; and regulated their rituals and warfare by observations of the planet Venus. At the beginning of the Post-Classic period (AD 9001521), Toltecs from the Valley of Mexico moved south into the area, building new ceremonial centres and ... | | Cruising Caye Caulker, Belize - the island life! Duration : 204 Seconds Caye Caulker, Belize (In Central America on the Caribbean sea) is one of the most fascinating vacation island I have been on. It is small, relatively un-developed but yet still very homey, safe and attractive. The local people on the island are perhaps one of the highlights, with of course snorkeling, diving, boating and eating some of the others! The native language of Belize is English (that is right, not Spanish) and many will also speak Creole as well, especially on the island and in Belize City. Here we are getting driven, like in a taxi, from one place to another. That is our hotel we stayed at, The Iguana Reef, which is excellent and surely the best hotel on the island with swimming pool and air conditioning, not to mention a lovely bar. There are no cars or trucks on the island and primarily only modified golf carts, which adds to making it an even more relaxed atmosphere! The ride is sometimes bumpy, sorry for the shaking video here and there!
