Architectural Topographical Museum scale model of Caracol - Mayan City, walk around
Duration : 179 Seconds

Not far from Belize, hidden under a thick canopy of tropical forest, lay ruins of Caracol - one of the largest Mayan cities in Central America. Only the central part of the city remains exposed and assessable for scientists and tourists. For decades archaeologists tried to map remains of Caracol, which could reveal unknown facts about mysterious Mayan culture. Surveying in the jungle was extremely difficult. Therefore a different approach to map the Caracol region more extensively was tried by scientists in 2009. Ruins of the ancient city were surveyed using airborne laser imagery technology (lidar). Laser signal was able to penetrate a thick barrier of tropical vegetation and reveal the advanced architecture of Caracol and surrounding grounds with roads and multiple agricultural terraces. Gamla Model Makers was privileged to be commissioned By University of Central Florida to fabricate a scale model of Caracol ruins using direct output of the lidar survey. Our goal was not to restore the original look of the city but to create a scaled down physical representation of this great discovery. We translated an actual 3D imagery data into CNC friendly format and carved a 1m x 1m topographical model, which was than finished, textured and painted in order to make more visible the most important features. The model was presented to international archaeological society. Its accuracy was recognized and highly appreciated. The model currently is a part of the permanent exhibit in ...

♫ Belize National Anthem ♫
Duration : 66 Seconds

For the outdoor enthusiast, Belize presents unlimited opportunities. The country has a lot more in common with the Caribbean island states (its style of architecture, for example) than its Central American neighbours. Every destination in Belize has its share of archaeological and national parks, marine and nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries. Mayan temples tower above rainforest canopies while an incredible array of marine wildlife finds protection in Belize's barrier reef. ********** This description is from WORLDTRAVELGUIDE. Engagement in Antigua, Guatemala
Duration : 236 Seconds

My then-girlfriend Jordan was in Guatemala for a missions trip in summer 2010. Secretly, two days after she left, I flew into Mexico with her brother and we spent a week traveling down the Yucatan Peninsula, through Belize and into Guatemala, eventually ending up in Antigua. Bordered by an enormous volcano and surrounded by cathedrals dating back to the 1500's, Antigua was absolutely gorgeous - and the site of my surprise proposal. The video cut off the first ten seconds or so, a quick narrative of our location and purpose, as well as a panorama of the surrounding view. The video picks up as I'm dashing around the upper level of the cathedral, avoiding the courtyard to the inside so as not to be seen, and follows me down the stairs, and into the courtyard where the surprise question is popped. Enjoy... and check out more of Phil's world travels at: iamphilblattenberger.blogspot.com

Belize: Altun ha
Duration : 182 Seconds

Duration : 397 Seconds

Ceramic fragments tell us that Muyil was settled by about 300 BC, the end of the Middle Formative, but no architectural elements this old have been found. The site grew slowly through the next 900 years. Farming grew in importance, but hunting, gathering and fishing were the major source of food. Like today, the forests and marshlands near the site were an abundant source of fish, game, and edible plants. In the latter part of this period (Early Classic - AD 300 - 600) masonry architecture appeared. Both civic-ceremonial architecture and different size house mounds indicate a developing class structure. During the Middle and Late Classic, architecture and ceramics show ties with sites to the south in the Peten and Belize, gradually shifting to have a greater focus on Maya sites to the west, such as Chichen Itza and Uxmal. Muyil is well-situated to have served as a route for both land and sea trade between Coba and areas to the south. In the Postclassic (after AD 1000) Muyil participates in both the architectural style of the East Coast, and in its ceramic styles. Many pieces of large Chen Mul censers that date to this era were recovered in excavations at Muyil. Following the arrival of the Spanish, nothing is heard from Muyil until the area is resettled in the mid 1800s. The population was likely diminished by disease, as well as fleeing into the interior of the peninsula.

Engineering an Empire, the Maya (1)
Duration : 890 Seconds

At the height of its glory, this mysterious civilization ruled a territory of 125000 square miles across parts of Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Belize. What began as a modest population of hunters and gatherers expanded into more than forty flourishing city-states who engineered sky-high temple-pyramids, ornate palaces and advanced hydraulic systems. Where did they come from and what catastrophes caused the collapse of this innovative civilization? From the Temple-Pyramids at Tikal, to the royal tomb at Palenque, to the star observatory at Chichen Itza, this episode will examine the architecture and infrastructure that enabled the rise and fall of the ancient Maya civilization.
