Xunantunich ancient Mayan ruins in Belize, Cental America. Occupied as early as 400 BC, thriving 600-700AD. El Castillo, the largest stucture can be seen in the distance. The Mayan region was divided into many kingdoms and principalities, and although the people employed a common language and religion these kingdoms had a long history of varying relations among each other over the centuries. Warfare and peace, prosperity and famine, commerce and recession, all these were part of the Mayan world.

Formerly British Honduras, Belize has a rich history starting with the great Maya civilization through pirates, buccaneers and slavery, to modern day Independence and democracy. Belize is a country of various cultures, languages, and ethnic groups. Approximately 270000 people in Belize consist of Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, Spanish, Maya, English, Mennonite, Lebanese, Chinese, and East Indian. Due to racial harmony and religious tolerance, all of these different elements have mixed and blended successfully, and Belize has gained a widespread reputation for its friendly peoples. One of the most prominent ethnic groups are the Creoles, which formed 30% of the population in 2001. Creoles are descendants of the intermingling of the early British settlers with African slaves. More than 40% of the population is Mestizo. They are descendants of mixed blood Mexicans and Yucatec Mayans who fled from the Yucatan in the mid 1800's. Obeah (sometimes spelled Obi, Obea or Obia) is a term used in the West Indies to refer to folk magic, sorcery, and religious practices derived from West African, and specifically Igbo origin. Obeah is similar to other African derived religions including Palo, Voodoo, Santeria, rootwork, and most of all hoodoo. Obeah is practiced in Suriname, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Barbados, Belize and other Caribbean countries. Obeah is associated with both benign and malignant magic, charms, luck, and with mysticism in general. In some Caribbean nations, Obeah refers to folk religions of the African diaspora. In some cases, aspects of these folk religions have survived through synthesis with Christian symbolism and practice introduced by European colonials and slave owners. Casual observation may conclude that Christian symbolism is incorporated into Obeah worship, but in fact may represent clandestine worship and religious protest. During the mid 19th century the appearance of a comet in the sky became the focal point of an outbreak of religious fanatical millennarianism among the Myal men of Jamaica. Spiritualism was at that time sweeping the English-speaking nations as well, and it readily appealed to those in the Afro-Caribbean diaspora, as spirit contact, especially with the dead, is an essential part of many African religions.During the conflict between Myal and Obeah, the Myal men positioned themselves as the "good" opponents to "evil" Obeah.
